If you didn’t know a thing about Russian history with its [centuries of genocidal colonialism starting shortly after the self-coronation of Ivan the Terrible](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Territorial_evolution_of_Russia#Table_of_changes) as the first czar of “All Russia” in 1547, you could be forgiven for concluding that “Russia” instead came into existence only as of May 9, 1945 given how much of spectacle the Russians have transformed this day.
You’d also think that the orange and black reminiscent of the [Colorado potato beetle](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colorado_potato_beetle#In_popular_culture) were the national colors given how so many Russians wear those [trashy oversized ribbons of the same color scheme](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ribbon_of_Saint_George#Russia) rather than something closer to the tricolor of red, white, and blue.
