      Hidelydoodely fellow Belgerino’s!

Today marks the 75th birthday of the Schuman declaration. For this occassion we’ve hung the European flag under the Triumphal Arch in Cinquantenaire Park in Brussels (yes, it’s the Royal Military Museum who’s responsible for these flags).

The Schuman Declaration is the starting point of a united Europe. Five years after the end of the Second World War, this marked the beginning of a new era of peace and cooperation.

In 1950, the French Foreign Minister, Robert Schuman, proposed placing the coal and steel production of France and Germany under joint authority. This led to the creation of the European Coal and Steel Community, which would later evolve into the European Union.

From the ruins of war emerged a project of peace, solidarity, and progress. The Schuman Declaration reminds us of the importance of cooperation and dialogue, and the power of freedom, democracy, and respect for human rights.
