Brown people will still exist even if immigration goes to zero.
Farage won’t be able to deliver on immigration, but he has the benefit of not having to at the moment, so it’s dumb Labour are taking their cues from Reform talking points given it’s never going to be enough.
But we did that because British people didn’t want to do the hard work of that job for the long hours and shit pay. So basically the old and dying and the very disabled will be fighting for themselves
I don’t necessarily oppose this, but I also don’t get how it’s going to work.
The care sector in this country depends on the exploitation of low-paid and often immigrant labour. It’s bullshit, it’s exploitative, but this is how it functions. If you remove the main source of low-paid and easily exploitable labour, the companies who run these homes are going to cease operating or have to offer higher pay to care workers.
This is good, this is something I support. But seeing that the current government (as well as most of the previous ones) are obsessed with cutting state spending and following their arbitrary fiscal rules, how are they going to fund a decision which will significantly increase the costs of social care? One solution would be inhousing it, employing labour and operating facilities directly, and cutting out the middle man. But I don’t see this current incarnation of Labour being interested in that.
I can’t help but feel this will either lead to significant understaffing in the industry (which will encourage the government to quietly u-turn in the future) or the government ensuring a bunch of loopholes are left in to ensure these companies can still get access to low-paid and easily exploitable labour.
No sane person would want to be a carer. Too much responsibility for too little pay. Doing your back in stacking shelves at unsociable hours in a supermarket is vastly preferable.
Good. My gf’s mum works in a care home, the migrants that work there are terrible employees for the most part. They’re not care workers, they’re people that are willing to work in care to live here. That’s a huge difference.
The one industry we definitely need immigrant labor for 💀. How about Uber eats drivers?
My Dad’s care home 58 rooms. He was in an intensive dementia room for a long time before moving upstairs when he recovered somewhat. The council were charged £1400 per week for his stay. Every room paid around this. That’s a little over £81,000 a week for a home that had skeleton staff. Or 4.2 million a year.
Where was the money going?
Can they honestly not afford good wages?
I voted Labour, have supported most of what they’ve done so far but they can piss off with this!
They need to stop being so fearful of the political right, they’re not going to gain ReformUK /Conservative voters over this, but they are losing their base as they shift further to the right.
We are a country of contradictions, we want good public services but we don’t want tax, we want world class universities but not international students, we want more homes but not near me, we want growth but not immigration and we want defence but we don’t want to pay for it.
Its a mess, we need leadership, we need a government who doesn’t try to please everyone but does what’s best in the national interest. Already the care sector is on its knees, recruitment is awful and this just makes it all worse.
We want care, we just don’t want “immigrants” caring for us.
We could have visas linked two-year (say) contracts. They would be renewed but would never be considered for permanent relocation and citizenship. We have overseas workers, overseas workers get money but we don’t have thousands of unskilled workers and their families here forever.
Care is about to get massively expensive. It’s the only way it’ll survive.
The knock on will be councils will be even more strapped.
Only if they are trained can speak English, pay tax and are not employed by a bloody agency
Apart from that I don’t give two hoots where they are from, employ a bloody clanger if they can do the job and wont beat or steel from pensioners
What we need is for care companies to have a legal obligation to hire and train on the job. There are a ton of people out of work and not enough jobs.
Maybe they could do a deal with the job centres where people who are:
– On their books for x amount of time
– Have a clean enhanced DBS.
– Have no long term conditions that would impede them from doing the work of a carer.
– Have a decent level of English.
Could be trained into care jobs.
Good. Finally they might try some other policies than bringing over half the third world who have no interest in caring for our elderly, just the visa and get on the 5 year pathway to benefits, social housing and free healthcare.
Government might want to try delivering some of its own services to reduce cost. So much profit is being sucked out of the system right now.
Also promote it as a career with progression. It’s not unskilled at all, it’s tough physical and emotional work.
Also policies to get families to do more of the heavy lifting too. Increased carers allowance etc
My dad had great care from mainly young lads from Bangladesh. They got 12quid. The agency got 24. There’s the problem.
Pay carers 18 quid an hour and you’ll get more people willing to do it
‘Govt chooses to gut already desperate sector which struggles to recruit domestically to appeal to electorate baser instincts with no thoughts as to the consequences’ would be a better headline. I’ve just come out of that sector and you might as well close half the places in the country.
