President Zelensky has offered to meet President Putin for peace negotiations in Istanbul after President Trump urged Ukraine to accept a Russian offer of direct talks.

“I will be waiting for Putin in Turkey on Thursday,” Zelensky said in his daily address to the nation. “I hope that this time, Putin will not look for excuses … We are ready to talk to end the war.”

Zelensky’s offer came just hours after he had said there could be no talks with Moscow unless it agreed to a truce across the 600-mile front. “The very first step in truly ending any war is a ceasefire,” he said.

Putin announced at the weekend that Russia was ready to sit down for talks with Ukraine in Istanbul on Thursday in an effort to eliminate the “root causes” of the war. There have been no direct negotiations between the two countries since the early weeks of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022
