Wonderful. 19 year old goes off to university. Finds a 100 year old institution in their new city. Decide they want to change it just for them to disappear off in 2 years time after graduating.
They look exactly as I’d expected as well.
Why can’t men have their own spaces? There’s all this talk of lack of male friendship and connection, but apparently that’s not ok if it’s “men only”. Men do change the way they behave when women are in a space.

Is this advertised as a men’s club?
If so, then this is such a non-issue. They can make their own club and leave this one alone. That wouldn’t be frowned upon or criticised by most.

I’m not sure either Bee Moore and Ellie Henshaw, members of the University of Lincoln’s Feminist Society, would be particularly clubbable or a good fit for Castle Hill Club (or even want to join for that matter).
“Random university-student society demands X” is not news.
These kinds of clubs are pretty anachronistic but there are specific carveouts for them in the legislation that the supreme court just used for its biological-sex ruling.

I hate these kind of stories. This is not women being excluded from society, it’s a private member’s club that chooses to only have men as members but members are allowed to bring women as guests. Absolutely nothing wrong with that and these spaces should continue to exist just like female only groups do.
Men you need to get it together more and have more of a social cohesion between you so you can stop making incels.

You’re talking about men’s issues but what about women’s issues! We experience all that and it’s all so much worse than what you go through so therefore you shouldn’t have anything.
I actually dislike this new wave of feminism they’re not fighting for equality they want to be on top and in some ways they’re already achieving that.
I mean, I get that *some* “men’s club” are places of power, where men network with other men of power .. and Castle Hill Club might have been like that in the past (given some important people once visited it) – but in a day-and-age where memberships of **any** organisation are on the decline, this just feels like a malicious action by some teenagers.

Women are allowed as guests of male members, and the members even voted about changing the rules.

I am a straight man and I would love to join a Gentleman’s club.

I must admit, I had a person in my mind’s eye when the article said “history student, feminist club” and rightly or wrongly I was spot on.
My opinion, which apparently is controversial, is that private clubs can have whatever rules they like, because they’re private. Providing those rules aren’t actually criminal (not suggesting Murder Club should exist), what is the problem? Clubs can have their own bylaws and processes for doing things, and that’s fine.
There are lots of clubs and activities out there, catering to a whole range of people. I personally wouldn’t want to join a men-only club, and that’s fine, because there are lots of other options out there. Or you can start your own. According to the article, this club came into existence because the members brought a failing pub, which they now staff with volunteers. No shortage of failing pubs in the UK.
If the only reason that you wish to join is that you feel that you being excluded is sexist then you probably shouldn’t join anyway.

This isn’t a news story. Nobody in Lincoln even knows this place exists, and students definitely aren’t interested in it. And teenagers having a dumb opinion based purely on vibes/emotion isn’t news, it’s life.
These clubs appeal to me about as much as a cup of extremely cheap “dark roast” instant coffee served without milk or sugar, but they are clearly not sexist or discriminatory. And it’s a small minority of “feminists” who give a shit. Just ignore them.
What’s so terrible about men having their own spaces? There are women’s only gyms, clubs, institutions, interest groups, and nobody cares. One men’s only space and there’s a horde of screeching harpies decrying it as “misogynistic”.

Single sex spaces are only permitted under the equality act if they meet one or more ‘legitimate aims’ and all of those are related to the services those spaces provide.
Membership is not relevant to the equality act. No one is entitled under the equality to be included in free associations of individuals. The law only comes in when we talk about the services those associations provide and of course the space they provide is one of those services.
It is perfectly legal to have male or female only membership but if you want to determine who can or cannot use a service you are providing, you must justify this by meeting one or more of the following ‘legitimate aims’, which are:
1. Only people of that sex need the service.
2. Providing the service jointly to both sexes would not be sufficiently effective.
Example: if women of a particular religion or belief will not use the local swimming pool at the same time as men, women-only swimming sessions could be provided as well as mainly-mixed sessions.
3. The level of need for the services makes it not reasonably practicable to provide separate services for each sex.
Example: a women-only support unit for women who have experienced domestic or sexual violence can be set up, even if there is no parallel men-only unit because of insufficient demand.
4. The service is provided at a hospital or other place, where users need special care, supervision or attention.
Example: single-sex wards in hospitals and nursing homes.
5. The service is likely to be used by more than one person at the same time and a woman might reasonably object to the presence of a man (or vice versa).
Example: separate male and female changing rooms.
6. A person might reasonably object to the service user being of the opposite sex because the service involves physical contact.
Example: sports sessions involving a high degree of physical contact or any service involving intimate personal health or hygiene.
You must also be able to show that providing the service on a single-sex basis is a proportionate means of achieving a legitimate aim. Again, proportionality requires that you balance the impact on all service users of providing services only to one sex.
So, clubs that provide services like dining, guest rooms, or other amenities cannot discriminate against members based on protected characteristics when offering those services. If a club restricts services based on a protected characteristic, it must be able to objectively justify the restriction by meeting a legitimate aim.
Clubs cannot offer different terms or conditions (like higher fees or restricted access) to members based on a protected characteristic that is not directly relevant to their membership. So they couldn’t have male only membership and then charge LGBT men more than hetrosexual men, for example.
So in short, stop stressing. Lincoln is not breaking the law unless it is providing services that discriminate based on a protected characteristic that does not meet a legitimate aim. I would hazard a guess that a century old institution has checked that one is covered by now.
While we’re at it, it’s obvious that any abusive remarks or harassment happening within a private club is illegal. There is no law that gives credence to “what happens in the club, stays in the club”. It’s simply not true. A private club is always bound by the laws of the Equality Act 2010, and therefore no discriminatory language, victimisation or harassment must occur. This applies to guests or potential members, too.

University of Lincoln feminism officer Ms Henshaw could set up her own Ladies Club but of course she won’t, because it’s much more fun to barge in where you aren’t wanted and ruin it for the people already there.
Henshaw is precisely the type of person this rule exists to exclude. She’s a troublemaker who ran off to the BBC to tattle-tale about them, so of course they don’t want to let her into their club.

Yeh it’s kinda short sighted and out the time but I imagine the average age of the members being north of 60.
If they’re looking to help keep the club going by breathing some youth into it then it’ll be silly of the club to live in decline and not change but if they’re doing it in a hammer see’s a nail way then they’re kinda assholes.

Male-only spaces aren’t allowed to exist. How many male-shelters are there for DV victims?
This reminds me of a story a few weeks ago where the “Men in Sheds” (a club to reduce loneliness and combat social isolation among elderly men) in Leicestershire was pressured to admit women.
“I kept asking my husband all the while ‘why can’t we join?'” and “Eventually they let us in, just one morning, eventually it became all the time, and now it’s 50% women, and we absolutely love it.” Said one of the new female members.
Now it’s been renamed the Men and Women in Sheds. Another one of the new female members said “I think the men maybe were a little concerned at the beginning because maybe they came here to get away from their wives and were worried we were going to take over. But we haven’t done that, we work well together.”
Except for the fact that the men there have already created separate rooms to get away from the women in order to discuss men’s issues in peace. But when asked for comment, all male members asked kept saying how brilliant it was to have women join.
I bet Ellie Henshaw from the University of Lincoln’s Feminist Society is itching to have a pint at the gentleman’s club and will frequent it.
