Yeah, they are trying to make it illegal. Which is a rare government W
Well I actually agree with her…
This is a bit of a tricky situation. The veil can be a voluntary action by women in other cultures and even in Finland, but they are also imposed at home over girls who don’t want to use them. So how to define to which culture the girl born here but raised Islamic belongs to? How to preserve the rights of this child who can’t completely decide for herself? And so on.
Veils and oppressive religions of any shape and form does not belong in a modern country. Go play victim somewhere else.
would you also say the same about female circumcision?
Low effort troll attempt.
Shes right.
Law isn’t static it’s dynamic and she was chosen by the people of Oulu region to change those laws. Also i would argue that certain religious group forcing their women from a young age to wear niqabs and burkas under an implicit threat of violence does clash with the finnish culture of equality and freedom to practise or not practise religion in any way individual themselves sees fit.
Cuz that’s a security threat? Not to mention the 1400-year-old idea of women being protected from men?
I am so atheist I think every religion should be ended and people should be given more scientific and evidence based education to get rid off these old remnants once and for all. But as you said, if it does not affect me who am I to judge. Just my utopian way to think and wish things were like this.
Hijabs are an oppression of human nature, and they are not natural here. Everyone is coming to Finland and trying not to clash with it, but then there are these obsessive people who want to go into a culture war pushing hijabs, especially to kids. Also, Islam can be pretty oppressive and invasive. Go and try to walk around in Western clothes somewhere in their country, and you will end up being attacked.
There are only a few people I met in Finland who actively oppose and sometimes fight the local culture, and they are Muslims. Everyone is obligated to start eating their food. Otherwise, it is considered disrespectful. And for me, it is rude when they ignore cultural and community rules, like laundry booking time or demanding that people around must follow their religious laws. My friend wasn’t able to bring her boyfriend to her kitchen for an evening tea at the shared apartment because “men smell like haram”. But invading the entire freezer and most of the fridge with halal food, not leaving any free spot for anyone, is diversity and freedom of belief.
What if those women are forced to wear it? It doesn’t belong to a free society like Finland.
Backwards ideology doesn’t and shouldn’t have a place in a liberal, modern and secular society. Just like with honor killings, other equal and minority rights issues, religious violence and extremism, supremacist though, and hate preaching mosques and imams; we simply don’t want these things here and should not have to deal with them. In Finland, you must abide by our laws and respect our norms and culture. Why should we stand by and accept something we’d find reprehensible if our own children were doing it? Muslims even in Finland are outraged by very minor issues from our point of view. Sure, we have freedom of speech and general liberties here, but don’t expect to bring norms, rituals, and belief systems here that clash with ours and expect no backlash or critique. I think everyone should be able to wear what they want but it should really be what that person wants, not a cultural norm that is being pressured on kids and parents by their own tribal peer groups and thought indoctrination.
I think a fraction of it is the question of… *is* the practice by the laws actually?
since “forcing kids without a choice to wear or do a thing” is skirting on the lines of being oppressive-ish.
Veiling young girls has no place in finland, this country is all about gender equality, individual freedom and every kid’s right to grow up without cultural/religious pressure they can’t even understand, let alone choose.
let’s be real, mostly kids don’t choose to wear veils, and if they do: it is almost always family or community pressure. That’s not freedom, it’s coercion. Teaching girls from day one that they need to cover up to be “good” or “respectable” just cements harmful gender norms
Finland shouldn’t bend its core values for “cultural sensitivity.” if you think covering up kids is essential, maybe finland isn’t the best fit. We don’t tweak our society to tolerate oppression we protect ppl, especially kids, from it
If they have to obey their dogmatic ideology, they can do it where they used to.
You can always go back to Saudi-Arabia if you don’t like it here 😊
They are allowed to go with their culture as long as its legal. Not all cultural stuff has to be legal tho and they want to make this illegal. For example child marriages are normal in many cultures, but should not be allowed in Finland. Ofc this is not as bad as child marriage, but it is bad and should also be made illegal.
Its not about oppressing cultures, its about banning oppressive things, which this obviously is.
There is no religious reason for this sort of thing either. Nothing in quran says that women need to be veiled completely like that. Its just something that some extremist groups started doing and it became a cultural thing in areas controlled by those extremist groups. Really it is about modesty and one could even argue that because hair is not seen as some hyper sexualised thing in our culture and in our times, even covering up hair is not required, as its really just saying not to dress up too ”slutty” and exposing hair is not seen as that.
Controversial take from me but anyway:
First off, no problems with anyone from any culture. People are people and cultures are cultures. No worries. Everyone is welcome and welcome to do what they want.
I am also welcome to see the reasons behind it.
Making only women wear clothing to cover themselves up is a very very obvious misogynistic and oppressive practice. The whole point is so that the man can have full ownership of “their” woman and that no other man should see her because she is property of that man and only he should see her. How there can be any other interpretation than that is beyond me.
This is clearly something that was introduced at some point in history by a patriarchy enforced through religion, which is throughout all times in history used by people to gain power and control over people. If people believe god is watching them they will not commit ‘sin’ according to those who created the religion and defined what sin is. Meanwhile they they sit on thrones in rooms filled with gold funded by people’s donations / taxes. The man in some religions can also have many wives if he wishes, yet the woman is tied to one man and has to cover up.
It is no different to puritans shaming women for nudity and sex. Something that continues today, much more so in some western cultures like the US where they established a lot of power.
It did play an important role in keeping society together for a long time and keeping people orderly. Before birth control and genetic testing it also did help ensure offspring were of the man who one was married to, but we no longer live in those times, yet those in power in religions use it still to control people, look at the Taliban if you want inspiration. But really the Christians and Catholics are not all that different. “Sex before marriage is a sin” etc etc. They have softened and modernized a lot but it is still a cult.
But nevertheless, I cannot see in any way how this is not simply oppressive toward women who have been brainwashed to believe that showing skin will get them sent to hell.
I don’t know if it is the government’s role, but straight up accepting every single religion without really any criticism is an interesting thing in society and shows that churches have done a good job in maintaining power in society even though all the activities could be carried out by non-cult nonprofit organizations that don’t need gold laden churches and brainwashing to achieve their missions of helping people.
Religion could easily be replaced by friendship groups without the ‘sacred’ texts written by oppressors, or a long list of rules designed to suit those at the top of the food chain.
Why does your culture want little girls to cover up themselves in the first place?
