Not going to happen while Mary Lou is leader
Go for it, and I’ll never touch the party again, I’d prefer to vote for the shit show that is FG/FF then vote for a party that wants to attack the smallest most vulnerable of society to placate a few gobshites that probably don’t even vote
I’m a SF voter but this would leave a very sour taste in my mouth.
Don’t bother your arse attending Pride events and talking about equality if you’re going to take away the rights of probably the most vulnerable group of people in our community.
Not opening that particular minefield but I can understand from a strategic point of view, especially in the north, why they want to push this issue to the background.
It is ultimately a wedge issue right across the political spectrum, in any large party it is impossible to gain consensus and invariably members will disagree with each other passionately about it, making a relatively small issue more impactful than it should be.
In the north they will have learned lessons from the damage it done to the SNP, a party which has the same aims as SF and nearly destroyed itself by trying to introduce unpopular legislation which was eventually rebuked by the UK Supreme Court.
The party was on the brink of securing another referendum before this and although there were other issues their elevation of the trans argument cost them a lot of support.
They’ll try ride two horses on this, thinking they’ll do enough to keep both sides happy. Neither side will be happy.
They are probably 1% or less of the population, it’s embarrassing how politicians are so obsessed with trans people. Time to move on Jesus Christ.
Out of ideas?
CULTURE WAR.
If they jump into this shit they’re going to blow up a significant portion of their voting base, and all for what? To make things more difficult for a tiny minority of our population that already has a fairly tough go of it? Jesus Christ lads just focus on the actual fucking problems like housing, instead of getting sucked into imported bigotry and losing votes.
In the north, their biggest challenge is Alliance and SDLP.
In the Republic, their biggest challenge is labour, social Dems, PBP, greens etc.
Moving further right will only split off more right wing voters.
Giving in to the right just makes u look weak and pathetic imo. The idea that trans folk represent some kind of a threat to society is a disgusting lie spread as a way to deflect.
Voting Sinn Féin is admitting that you’ve failed life as an adult and you need mummy government to look after you.
Spineless cunts if they do.
I don’t understand the psychologically behind why a person changes gender, I don’t understand how you know you’re a man or a woman without just being one.
But I do understand that it is absolutely none of my fucking business what another person decides what is best for them. Now I’ve never voted, but I have recently registered because I was going to vote for Sinn Fein because I believe we needed a change.
But any political party or person set out on limiting minority’s rights are not getting my vote.
It already happened. Sinn Fein watered down and removed commitments to trans people in their 2024 manifesto compared to their 2020.
They’ve supported removing trans healthcare in Northern Ireland and then act surprised when they got banned from prides there.
While Cullinane has apologised for his comments, Mac Lochlainn who made similar hasn’t.
I’d feel a Sinn Fein lead government could pose a greater threat to trans rights than the current one. Not that the current will be good, they just won’t change anything.
Who would’ve thought Sinn Fein are the true West Brit party?
I know a fair amount of this is manufactured rubbish coming from the states and so on.
But it’s actually shameful how much this has come to dominate the news and online conversations. Trans people are a tiny tiny part of the population and the fact that their entire lives and existence is allowed to be debated day in day out is horrific.
In the run up to the marriage referendum, it was obvious that public support was on our side, but I found it absolutely soul destroying to open up the paper or fucking Facebook every day to see another “oh my god the poor childer” piece from Breda O’Brien (or similar). I cannot fathom how a trans person in general, or a trans teen in particular must feel.
We can be a lot better than this lads.
I really think it’s wildly overestimated how relevant the trans issue is to the average punter. And, I know this is anecdotal, but my own experience from friends and acquaintances who do say they very much support trans rights are the same people that can’t be bothered to get off their hole and vote every few years.
I guess some in Sinn Fein have copped that, despite all the activism and campaigning, it could be more of a vote loser rather than a vote winner with people who would actually vote for them. But no doubt the party will continue trying to ride both horses like with immigration and we’ll have FG and FF forever more amen.
“Speaking on The Late Late Show, **McDonald said that Sinn Féin’s position has not changed** but that the implications of the UK Supreme Court ruling would need to be studied, particularly since it will impact Northern Ireland.”
Doesn’t seem like they’re about to reverse course at all. And of course the legal implications in Northern Ireland would have to be looked into.
Sinn Fein are in a tricky position overall given where their votes are coming from. It’s a traditionally working class party with nationalist and socialist ideals (I don’t mean they’re Nazis though?.
Its modern voting base is split between young college educated socialists and older working class nationalists and all of its policies are about trying to appease these two groups. The inconsistencies in policy- on immigration, this- are all to do with their broad base.
I suspect they won’t resolve it and will keep fudging, making no one happy until one part of the party’s voters decamp to either another socialist or nationalist party.
Does Sinn Fein hold any genuine position beyond “fuck ffg” and “brits out” ?
Exact figures are hard to pin down but most estimates have trans people are about 0.5% of the population. They should not have significant headline coverage in the media in this country. It’s all distraction. Live and let live.
