He wants to impose American-style bandit capitalism on the rest of the world because they’ve let their medical corporations grow to big to effectively regulate, same with the arms industry.
Counter-proposal: Let’s start ignoring US patents and just manufacture generics in Europe.
Instead of claiming the US is “subsidising” our healthcare, maybe he should look into why insulin costs hundreds of dollars per vial in the US, while it can be produced for pennies.
Sounds like the only thing they are subsidising are the pharmaceutical industry’s exorbitantly massive profit margins.

So what seems to be the issue here is that we negotiate when buying medical products

One of the major problems with US healthcare is the middlemen siphoning money from desperate people. You don’t change that by forcing a French kid to pay €1,000 for an inhaler.
This is just not how multinational companies work. And he knows that. Maybe if EU subsidiary and US Subsidiary were both pass through companies for a sole proprietorship.. Pfizer Italia is literally under probe right now for profit offshoring with Pfizer Netherlands. This is tax fraud .. and I hope Trump supporters know that Italian corporations actually pay taxes without cheating the public 75% what they should owe (small italian companies are another story.. lol)

Prices are lower in Europe because we have proper laws that prevent Big Pharma from exploiting us. They are high in the US because they don’t.
If this was about covering expenses, Big Pharma would make prices roughly equal all across the world, slightly more expensive in Europe than now, much cheaper in the US. There’s no ahot they’d just raise prices to absurd levels in only one country, but keep them fair elsewhere. How, please, can anyone believe that?
