It’s an undoubtably unpopular take on this subreddit of all places, but Southern Azerbaijanis are so well integrated to Iran, despite sharing the same language and general idea of a culture they’re more akin to simply Turkic Iranians, rather than “southern Azerbaijanis.” This would probably be the case of the whole of Azerbaijan had Russia not intervened.
It’s be difficult for Azerbaijanis to not be so thoroughly integrated into Iran when for most of modern Iranian history it’s been dominated by pseudo-Azeri groups.
