Ah yeah, just jump in and drive off. No issues there.

lets create another problem where people just ride about on learner permits for years and never bother going for the license, yes that will stop the backlog very smart

Haha this sums up the government perfectly. “This is outrageous! Students have no access to public transport! They cant afford accomodation! The waiting lists for the driving test are far too long! Someone needs to do something!…….. Actually no, lets just let them drive cars around whether they’re able to do it or not, its easier”.

There’s thousands of fully licensed drivers who shouldn’t even be let drive unaccompanied

Perfect solution here would be letting instructors conduct tests. Don’t know why they don’t go with that.

2nd permit holders with no accident history maybe…could get mental allowing 1st time drivers loose on their own.
Lowering the standard is not a solution for not meeting the infrastructure needs to deliver the service.

You must be bloody joking!!!! The standard of driving in this country is bad enough even amongst qualified drivers, let alone learners.

Judging on driving I’ve see on the roads the past 2 years I’d say it’s safe to say they should be more worried about people driving with no licenses because there’s no way some drivers I’ve seen could have a license.

To be fair, it is either this or fix the backlog – and that is never going to fucking happen.
A lot of people “learning to drive” don’t have a qualified driver to sit in the car with them.

It’s how it works with motorcycles here tbf, but you have to complete your IBT ( ~16 hours of training with an instructor, usually done over the course of two days ) before being legally allowed drive on the road.

I wouldn’t be against this with certain conditions. After a certain amount of time, the accompanying drier just becomes another passenger anyway. Unless the accompanying driver is a parent, they probably aren’t going to be doing much to teach the driver either.
If the driver has done a sufficient amount of lessons, applied for their test and has had their licence for over a set number of months, letting them drive unaccompanied for work or education purposes probably won’t make much of difference to the roads.

Thing is the EDT doesn’t teach you how to drive, it teaches you how to pass a test. You only really start learning when you go out on your own.
After the 12 lessons a instructor should be able to give you a certificate if you are able to drive unaccompanied with a smart driving tracker.

It’s already happening, due to the excessive wait lists. If you keep your eyes peeled you’ll see absolutely loads of L plate cars being driven around with a single occupant. You can just tell from observing, that tiny bit of hesitancy, that smidge slower off from the start and taking corners at lights and so on that they’re L drivers just saying “Fuck it” and going out.
In some aspects I understand it as learner myself you need practice and nothing gives greater experience than be it in work or life than doing things solo. Think of the first time you’re trained to do something in a job, it’s only when you’re let loose to do it on your own, with a bit of sink or swim and the hand holding unavailable to you that you really bed down experience and confidence.
I think it’s probably the case that those doing such need it because the few times mum or dad or the instructor is available just isn’t cutting it. I know it’s wrong and the stats of driver deaths and learners etc which caused the change in legislation years ago. TBH I couldn’t conscience it myself in my Dads car, what if you’re caught and the car seized, fined and penalty points handed out to all, I couldn’t risk that. I’d say a fair few who are, are doing it in their own car in which the risk is theirs alone.
It’s a massive ishambles TBH, you can hardly get lessons for love nor money as well on top of the huge waiting lists for tests. Year on year kids are growing up and early 20 somethings looking to get out and drive. The system can’t play catchup and you’re just expected to try and subsist on driving around with a full license holder whenever you can for months until the test. Pity there’s no middle ground option like a scenario where instructors could sign you off after 12 tests complete and they’re satisfied you could safely drive on your own or something.

This law doesn’t stop people from doing this anyways. So I don’t think it’s a bad idea to look at other solutions because the current approach isn’t working.

The learner driver system isn’t fit for purpose and a complete rip off onto of the price of insurance and the rest. Young people haven’t a chance anymore to get a start in this country it’s sick.
