Or more people simply cant afford to have children.
Besides that there is a lack of housing (with childen you probably need a bigger flat), Kita-places, school-places, doctors etc.

I think the housing market + war + ecconomically unstable situation + covid pandemic + gender war on the internet etc.
Our fathers would have often 1 stable work threw whole life. Currently a young person is estimated to change work 20-30 times during the lifetime. Lack of stability and cheap housing is the real issue. And this is not only about the Germany, whole Europe looks the same… people are tired, exhausted of working, competing and growing loneliness. Hard times to live in!

This is completely normal and will probably never reverse. **The better we live the less children we have**, there can be local small fluctuations within a few decimal points, but nothing is diverting it massively. E.g. children per woman can be increased by 0.05 if living costs are lower and there are more kindergarten places, but then it will even itself out.
The only way to reverse this trend is if we move back to a full theocracy or have a catastrophe that destroys most of civilization.
The climate in Germany is changing quickly, but I doubt that it’s about temperature.

There are probably a bunch of reasons but insecurity can definitely be a factor…and i don’t think it’s too far fetched that all the crisis lately (including Ukraine war and climate change) are raising the level of feeling insecure in this world.
I actually personally know two women that say, part of the reason that they don’t want kids is, that they don’t see a bright future for them (or humanity in general) because of climate change.

I’m neutral about having kids, but the idea of having to hunt for a bigger apartment in Berlin to accommodate a growing family fills me with dread.

“Many do not ralize their actual desire to have children” – or maybe they have indeed not desire to have children. Could it be possible that women aren’t just birthing machines, Welt?!
Minute_Obligation953 on
It’s part of the reason for us. Cannot bring a kid into the world and explain this war. Especially coming from the neighbour country and explaining our families history. Just because my grandparents have a bit of land, my grandpa was sent to gulag (yeah ruzzians did it) in the most extreme conditions stuffed like animals in pig wagons.
Another reason is also money. It cost lots of money to bring a kid to a good life. I grow up poor and don’t want my kids have the same issues.

I think society has continously progressed without any consideration for “new generations”.
we have endless e-commerce platforms, banking apps, AI-Tools and countless more innovations to enhance our lives, but nothing that makes childcare easier than it was 50 years ago (I was not there, but I assume).
quite the opposite, the cost of living space and “basic needs” require more effort, skill and luck then I could achieve so far in my life.

what kind of rhetoric car wreck is this sentence?
I should use that too.
Instead of saying “my boss does not want to give me a raise” I should say “My boss does not realize his desire to give me a raise”. Maybe it works.

We don’t need that much people, we are overpopulated. The climate WILL just keep getting worse and worse, we will have to handle climate refugees, there might be wars because of it… And on top of that, going to work everyday and handling bills is hard enough as it is. Who would want to take care of children when you can chill out in your free time and do things that actually make you happy?

Yes and no.
We have 2024. People realize that being childfree is okay, though some weird people think its a duty to have a child lol.
calvados7777 on
Hmm, there is a thing to the war and climate change. But I think the biggest reason is the cost nowadays. Having a child in germany is literally the most expensive thing you can do. Of course, the birth itself is more or less free, but everything after that…. is expensive as hell. My brother-in-law just got a child, and they can only manage financially because they are supported by the state (Bürgergeld). If they didn’t have that, then there would be absolutely no chance whatsoever for them to survive financially.
Renting a flat is expensive alone, but add to that a car, insurance, groceries, and other expenses needed for stuff like a phone and/or Internet, and you have a recipe for disaster. Living in a city, getting an average income of 2,3k a month is just not enough to support a child, and many germans know that. Then there are the facts other people say, kita places, housing problems and other stuff.
It seems like life in germany (and actually many other Western countries) is genuinely against the idea of having children sadly.
Tldr: germany is expensive, little to no encouragement to have children and a lot of possible issues when having a child.

There is absolutely no support and infrastructure to have children (child care, doctors, housing), it’s unaffordable (raising kids costs an estimated 200k), while all of our money goes to the ruling class, we are at the brink of war against an enemy that is known to use torture, displacement, murder and sexual violence as war tactics, we are at the brink of doom due to climate change and its resulting mass migration, reactionary forces are rising threatening our freedoms, rights (women especially) and safety, other people are selfish and care for noone but themselves..
Also personally, I haven’t settled down. I’ll likely move places in 2 years. I don’t want to have children before that. So yea.. there you go
