Bureaucracy like value for money assessments are why things like this cost so much in the public sector. A private company building a bike shelter doesn’t do or need a “value for money assessment”. Decision makers are accountable for their decisions and would like a such a quote and say “that’s a rip off, we’re not paying that”

      Well, I’m shocked!

      Shocked, I tell you!

Anything like this has never happened here before!

      Yeah…

The value assessment would have brought in contsultants charging another 300k

One thing that keeps getting proven right is that it’s easy to spend other people’s money.

If whoever approved this had to pay for it themselves, you would be guaranteed that it would have been a reasonable price.

I’m willing to bet that’s just the tip of the iceberg . They’re non-stop doing road works where I am . They got rid of one roundabout and two slip roads near me , there was nothing wrong with them . They’re putting a path all the way along a road which would be fine, but there’s already a path on the other side of the hedge all the way up all the canal beside the road . It just seems like a waste of money to me unless you’re the one getting the contracts

Another vastly over-egged “scandal”. The state installs hundreds of bike shelters every year attached to various projects like schools, public buildings etc at low cost. There is no systemic issue here.

One relatively junior person in OPW made a relatively minor error of judgement on escalating costs driven by the unique requirements demanded of a heritage site. There is sweet FA to learn here other than someone should get a bollacking and a lower appraisal.

In fact, now the real scandal will occur because every bike shed from today on will need a value appraisal costing money that will potentially dwarf the cost of the actual bike shed. This is the result of the increasingly mob like democracy where every minor thing is spun as a crisis or disaster.

We do not need a value assessment what we need is common sense!!! Something no one seems to have.

the person who built this is driving around a range rover.

      That’s all that matters……
