>Parliament’s cross-party public accounts committee heard evidence that women’s refuges were being forced to turn down 65% of requests for support amid soaring cases, while other dedicated services operating in communities were able to help only about half of those who requested it.
As a woman this is part of why I’m so frustrated at the TERFs attempt at framing trans women as the biggest threat to refuge centers. They are much more interested in ensuring every refuge center is trans-exclusive rather than ensuring they can freaking function in the first place! It’s a complete distraction to what feminism is and is supposed to be.
Yet they seem so sure that it’s trans women causing this…
I wish the government would actually look at the evidence and take appropriate action instead of scapegoating a minority for this who are actually also the victim.
I mean if you’re talking about Rotherham sure seems that way
Has it massively gone up or something? Seems like it’s been fairly steady for a couple of decades.
Government like to claim they fund these refuges, I can speak from personal experience, this isn’t the case for many. The government do fund SOME, but MOST rely on charities and are privately run.
It comes to something when you have to tell a lady with a career that she either needs to cut her hours to part-time, or quit her job because she won’t be able to afford the weekly rent in these places. Having to give up their whole lives after losing most of their life to an abuser, just so they can claim housing benefit to keep a roof over their heads. It’s disgusting.
The support for vulnerable women and CHILDREN (not just young girls) is abysmal. Seeing these people broken, trying to help them see the light, but not being able to offer all the support they need is devastating.
There needs to be more funding funnelled in to refuges from the government.
It’s darkly comic to me that we spend so much time saying how we need to change men’s attitudes to women and how language affects behaviours and all this stuff, while we ignore the people who come to Britain from countries where women are second class citizens. For some reason, we expect these people to suddenly abandon their medieval attitudes towards women as soon as they arrive in the UK.
They really are. Women and girls are underrepresented as victims of violent crime.
Make it legal for all women to carry knives.
Still illegal to use them on someone but level the playing field, reverse the implicit threat of violence that is in so many male/female interactions.
How many blokes would catcall, grope or attempt to assault women if they knew there was a chance violence could be coming back their way?
How much more comfortable would women be in giving a firm no, fuck off as a response rather than having to soften it for fear of being attacked?
Swap knives for tasers or whatever if that makes you feel better about it.
Yet another thread about an issue affecting women that has more comments about other issues than it does about how to address the issue affecting women.
Always last, even when it’s directly about women
This has been an issue for a long long time – doesn’t help that the system really isn’t set up to address it either.
It’s unlikely the crime statistics are a true reflection of how bad things are – I mean how many of us have stories where we were either told making a report was pointless as it’s “your word against them”, “it was a long time ago now” or “well, what were you doing?”, even those who do soldier on through, how many actually got justice?
I know my own SA was shrugged off and my sister had an awful time with the justice system when it came to trying to get protection from her abusive ex husband.
It’s not so much that they are oblivious to it – it’s simply that the system doesn’t work in tackling it.
Is there are violence against little boys or are they safe?
When did we stop saying domestic violence and start saying violence against women and girls (yes I know it’s not exclusively domestic), but it excludes 50% of children. It used to women and children first, now language has shifted to women and girls and you wonder why young boys are seeking out strong male role models who encourage violence against women and girls. It’s literally self defeating
Of course they are, they’re out of touch with the majority of the population. Thats what happens when privileged sheltered individuals from the Cotswolds and educated in Oxbridge run the country. They haven’t a clue.
You’d have to end violence and expectations of violence towards men to end it towards women if their partners are mainly perpetrators.
About time we stopped obsessing over trans people who are less than 1% of the population and actually focused on the real threats to women and girls.
