She acknowledged the significant mitigating factors in this case—that Sean Fitzpatrick had no previous convictions and that he had abandoned his teacher training studies—but she said she had to mark the devastating consequences of what had happened.
She sentenced Fitzpatrick to three years in jail, with the final 18 months suspended.
Day after day, paltry sentences

Drunk hanging out of your drunk mates car. What a sad way to go.

No winners in these situations, sorry for all concerned.

We all do stupid things when we are young, some have to pay a horrible price for it, some get away with it, consequence free.

*You took the law and Adam’s life into your own hands when you drove his car … You took Adam’s voice when you drove his car, and you killed him. Nobody else’s decision but your own. Not a good friend of Adam’s,” she said*
*Ms Kirwan also read a statement on behalf of her mother Lourda, who said that the person responsible “has to answer for his actions”, but there is “no punishment that would serve as justice for my son’s life*
This is from the families statement.
My heart goes out to them, really it does (there but for the grace of god go so many of us) but they don’t seem to acknowledge their sons own role in his death.
Like there are no winners here whatsoever but (unless I’m missing something) their son handed over his keys and allowed someone he knew was drunk to drive his car for him and he the then *chose* to hang out of the door while it was being driven. I 100% think yer man deserves a sentence but he’s not the *only* one to blame. I dont want to sound harsh cos its really tragic but there was a pair of them in it. Very sad.
