This week, Péter Magyar’s “March for National Unity” set off from Budapest, following a scandal caused by Viktor Orbán’s endorsement of an extremist, anti-Hungarian candidate in the Romanian elections.

I’ve written to you about him before — I don’t want to bore anyone — but this is truly a huge moment here in Hungary. The enthusiasm is enormous. The message of the opposition is reaching people who haven’t been approached for years, not even by Fidesz or Orbán, despite these regions traditionally being their strongholds.

In recent days, Magyar has been singing, eating breakfast and lunch with people, chatting with everyone, listening to all their concerns — and the line of people walking with him keeps growing as they approach Szolnok, a relatively large town by Hungarian standards.

The latest estimates say the crowd walking with him now stretches for one kilometre. Many elderly people have also joined, or simply come out to greet them. Magyar stops to shake everyone’s hand — there was a heartwarming moment when he ran up to an old lady sitting in a car just to greet her.

Meanwhile, he also shared some good news regarding the elections: according to polling data he received from the villages — traditionally Fidesz’s strongholds — the ruling party’s lead is shrinking. Their advantage is now down to just 5 percentage points.
