It is enough that NATO to be just as strong to deter Russia from attacking. It doesn’t have to be the strongest war machine, neither it has to be much stronger than Russia. In most cases countries does not attack to another one that is equally strong, and if they do it often end up bad for the attacker. Otherwise it means mutually assured destruction, especially in the case of NATO vs Russia, and this is the case even if USA leaves NATO (which is the main concern of Europeans on NATO since Trump was elected).

The little war of a few days lasted some time now, so the calculations of Putin weren’t that correct. Still it hurts so much, that so many people are suffering and dying. I hate this stupid war!
