How about we don’t subsidize some of the largest companies in the world, AND then hardly tax them.

I wish Ireland would look at what’s happened in Nevada (US)…we gave away heinous amounts of subsidies to bring Tesla and data centers in, and all it did was destroy our housing market, take all our water, increase strain on our energy grid, while giving us back zero in taxes. It was sold as we’d become the next Silicon Valley, but we’re nothing more than a storage unit—all of the data centers are being used FOR Silicon Valley because they’ve run out of space / are limited on their energy. Not one single company has moved their headquarters here, or even secondary offices like it was suggested. Instead we have some shitty warehouse jobs with Amazon that don’t pay living wages, or factory jobs with Tesla where people have to commit an hour or more each way. And the rest is just hundreds of thousands of acres of data centers destroying our energy grid.

The county they’re in doesn’t have taxes to fix roads, create infrastructure like bridges, or provide community resources, while these companies (Tesla, Apple, google, Panasonic among others) are making billions in profit while polluting the shit out of the water and air in our desert while paying us nothing.

Don’t believe anything they promise. If they wanted to bring an economic impact to Ireland, they would have already.

Brilliant. We’re finally realising we rely on tech giants and should do everything in our power to attract and retain them.

Too many moral high grounders here were raised and educated on money from multinationals but snipe at the thought of it working both ways. The billions used to attract them came from other multinationals.

Aren’t Samsung like…extra dodgy with their hiring practices and cliques?

Dont get me wrong, more companies is good but also I’d rather they didnt import some of their business shit here

Totally unrelated but… when did BP clone the FT website and retain its green branding, leading to that freak show of a home page? I generally read on the app which is still white background but this link brought me to desktop site which is pink, or whatever you’d call it

Fantastic news. There’s a reason FF/FG have been in power so long and it’s this. They have capitalised on opportunities making our economy the envy of so many though granted services could definitely be better given the money here

TSMC would be awesome to have but doesn’t it come with a lot of political baggage in US/China relations?

    8. This is a solid plan and we should definitely double down on it. Companies will be looking to diversify outside of Taiwan for obvious reasons and we’ve the expertise and supply chains here thanks to Intel.

Other tech companies here already struggle to hire and train staff due to housing so good luck with this Samsung I guess.

Would be huge if we could nab either of these fab foundry giants, although they should be encouraged to build anywhere other than Leinster

It would be nice if a serious resilient non green bs power grid was one of the things they thought of using to lure them

We certainly have the skilled staff, experience and servicing companies for it.

The major elephant in the room is our glacial planning laws.
