I thought they were scared that someone might get the idea of killing the Mad King.

    2. NotYourBroJane on

Ah yes, nothing corrupts youth quite like dragons and wizards. Next up: banning fairy tales for promoting witchcraft

    3. Fickle_Definition351 on

Is this “child-free” thing a bigger culture war issue in Russia than elsewhere?

    4. Vovinio2012 on

Can relate, fate of Tywin Lannister is a big “no” about having kids.

    5. CommandObjective on

From reading the article it seems like they deem a work to be “child-free” propaganda if at least one of the adult characters don’t have children or at the very least either pursue a lifestyle that would preclude having children or imply that don’t want them.

That is a pretty wide net.

Game of Thrones is child free propaganda???

      How????

    7. WeAreTheMachine368 on

Has probably got more to do with the heroes in those stories standing up to a despot. Of course Russian regime does not want their children to learn this lesson.

    8. thecraftybee1981 on

A fantasy world set in a school for children is child-free propaganda? Are the kids there so fucking awful that it might persuade people not to have any kids?

    9. -Tryphon- on

Because Russia is in such a good demographic situation right now, its not like they have EXACTLY the same problem…

    10. thrownkitchensink on

Sending people into a war to die is child free propaganda. There are less Russians having less Russians.

    11. TrollForestFinn on

Russian government once again facing the tough choice between a) forcing people to have kids to replace the losses in their war machine, and b) simply not starting wars

    12. TSSalamander on

I’d like to note that there’s not a single instance in harry potter that i can think of where biological parents hate their kids, their kids made them more miserable, or where their kids hate them.

I can only think of one in GoT, which is Tyrion Lanister. The childless in GoT aren’t so out of choice either. they’re too young, failures in love, or forcibly castrated at a young age. Or an evil witch.

    13. South_Dependent_1128 on

Ah right, Harry was loved by his family(not the Dursleys) and went to school to get a good education. Something like Russia which is against both education and love is completely against that.

    14. I remember how I lived in Russia in the early 2000s, when the limited freedoms acquired in the 1990s still mostly existed, the arts were vibrant, and people there **loved** Harry Potter, even in the terrible (even by local standards) neighborhood I lived in. Back then Putin actually pretended to be integrating with the world and adopting “flashy new things”. Economically Russia did integrate with Europe until 2014, but of course, Putin was on collision course from the start, and there were many signs of that early on too.

How ironic that Russians, who love Western content so much, have allowed their politicians to become this unhinged.

    15. softDisk-60 on

They must have banned 100% of Russian literature by now, no?

    16. Gowithallyourheart23 on

The more I hear about Russia the more sure I am that I never want to step foot there, which is a shame because I love how the language sounds

    17. NeoFateSoul on

Well with GoT,I can see it as a child-free propaganda 💀

    18. ShadowAze on

“Pfff, they protest the media because the author is a transphobe? What a bunch of wokers.”

Also, the same people (probably) when Russia bans the same media:” Russia stronk, no more westoid propaganda about *checks notes* not having children”

    19. Sire, when I think of child-free propaganda, I think of a show that is all about pumping out kids and bringing them in positions of power lol

If anything, these middle age house of cards types of shows would be propaganda for making children.

imagine having a loudmouth dictatorship so pity and crippled that the ministry of magic and flying brooms is a threat to you. ridicolous.

    21. PineBNorth85 on

Yeah, Joffrey was so awful no one wanted kids after that.

    22. Miss_Annie_Munich on

Lord Voldemort will be very, very angry and send his death eaters to the Kremlin

    23. Ready-Nobody-1903 on

But… in Harry Potter they *are* children…

    24. Klinker1234 on

Coming from the nation where state policy is that each woman must birth 10-12 children to replace their loses in Ukraine.

    25. Available_Bar_3922 on

So all foreign made movies basically, that isnt tainted by Russian thought leaders.
      Gotcha !!

    26. yamidevil on

One would think it would be quite opposite call for Harry Potter. Ahm books that follow kids (early) and with fast forward of those kids having kids …..

    27. Any-Original-6113 on

I knew that there were strange people in Russia, but it was only after this article that I realized that they had completely fucked up lunatics in parliament.

    28. got_light on

Also ruzzke: promote 1000+ warmongery/criminal/pseudopatriotic/rasist films

    29. Wait till they read how Sonja Rostov ends up in War and Peace

    30. djnorthstar on

The best child free propaganda is made by russia themselfs.

    31. Adventurous_Bite9287 on

Harry Potter is actually a lot about how fascists infiltrate the state and rule with fear and hate. It is a pretty good representation how modern Nazis are actively undermining the government and politics and plot against them.

    32. Far_Mycologist_5782 on

Makes sense they would want to ban “child-free propaganda”. They’ve got ~235,000 dead/crippled soldiers to replace.

    33. Sure_Translator_4252 on

OK I get that it’s probably a pretext for banning non-Russian / pro-Ukraine authors but could they not have come up with a better excuse?! Harry Potter is full of adults who choose to have multiple children at a young age. I suppose a lot of the teachers didn’t but pretty much all main teenage characters get married and have babies, as did those from the marauder era. I actually found it so unrealistic that virtually everyone got married and had kids with their teenage sweetheart lol.

    34. Malice-Mizer-Hado on

I mean hey at least they don’t have to read a TERF bitches garbage fantasy series that peaked in the early 2000’s-2010’s
