The borders are not phantom. On the contrary, natural distribution of population circa 1815 post partition. East vs West. German vs Russian occupation.

The damage done, is obvious, even today, unfortunately.

      Traumatic events heal slow.

    2. Whenever I see this phantom partition, I truly don’t understand it. Why do the Poles living in what used to be Germany vote pro EU etc? What’s different there?

It realy is extremely speciflicly historicaly accurate

Of course one thinks about the old german Reichs border. But in it there were parts with a significant polish population. Like, for example seen here, the area south/southwest of danzig or the most southern part of silesia.

And the lesson we keep learning is that Communism cripples societies for decades after having ruled them.

On the voting map of Croatia, you can clearly see the most extensive borders of the Ottoman Empire.

[Polish phantom borders not seen on results map of 1995 presidential election](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1995_Polish_presidential_election#/media/File:1995_Polish_presidential_election_by_Voivodeship.svg)

Why? Because [Kwaśniewski](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aleksander_Kwa%C5%9Bniewski) was the only President in Polish history who knew how to appeal to people across the city vs town vs village divisions. He had the unique ability to pose as a “man of the people” and a political populist (in the bad sense of that word) on a Monday (“Media don’t support me, the Church says anything but me, Warsaw elites try to do anything to prevent my win, but it’s actually the people who want to elect me”, [cf. the 1995 campaign vid](https://youtu.be/Z0jLTqdoCn4?si=UB_MZviZ5hmFvMoM&t=13)), and as an intellectual with a moderate pro-EU platform on a Tuesday.

      Trzaskowski lacks this ability, unfortunately.
