CBP Assistant Commissioner for Public Affairs Hilton Beckham told Newsweek: “Another false narrative. These travelers weren’t deported—they were denied entry after attempting to enter the U.S. under false pretenses. One used a Visitor visa, the other the Visa Waiver Program. Both claimed they were touring California but later admitted they intended to work—something strictly prohibited under U.S. immigration laws for these visas.”
Not sure to which point this is reliable (I’d appreciate if someone could confirm it) but if they admitted that they intended to work then the US had every right to deny entry

I was last in the USA in 1999 with my wife. We had to transfer from one international flight to another. There wasn’t an international area, so we had to go out through US immigration and then back in again. The immigration agents managed to make us vow to never go back to the USA.
BTW we’re both white and English speaking. I imagine that a couple of young German girls could easily have their words twisted by aggressive officials.

The worst thing about this is that they were accused of planning to work when they didn’t do that. During their interviews they tried to explain how they got the money they had and said that they *had previously* been working remotely but weren’t planning to on this trip in America because the knew that wasn’t allowed.
They made a post and that was verified but they and this story are being pursued everywhere by Anti-European propagandists and so everything is being deleted and replaced with links to Homeland Security propaganda. [I found a copy and recorded the text at the tme](https://www.reddit.com/r/backpacking/comments/1k4rjol/comment/mor9m2c/). Now the propagandists are following this story everywhere and repeating lies about them.
Imagine that you go abroad following all the rules carefully. Working remotely in the countries that welcome it (for example Indonesia, Iceland and Portugal all offer special “digital nomad” visas) and not in the ones that don’t. Then one of those countries picks on you because you come from Europe and starts spreading lies about you all over the media. Now no country you go to will trust you ever again and likely your source of income will have dried up.

So if you are visiting friends over there you are banned from staying at their place and forced to book a hotel?
Violence_0f_Action on
Having a place to stay is a basic requirement for visiting pretty much any country. It’s something that needs to be stated on immigration forms.
Accomplished_Road_79 on
Such a nothing story America has been like this for years Canada and Australia are the exact same if you can’t prove you have appropriate accommodation for your stay you won’t be allowed in. Maybe us Europeans have gotten so used to allowing absolutely anyone into our countries for any reason that even the most basic checks seem dystopian.
kenypowa on
Is it so hard to book a couple nights of accomodation when you go to a new country?
Seriously people, if you come to Canada or Japan, and can’t tell the custom agent will you are staying tonight, you’d be denied entry.
butwhywedothis on
So the officials thought since they don’t have hotel once they enter they will hide somewhere in the US and not go back to Germany? Did it not occur to them to ask for their return ticket? But most importantly why would someone from Germany would like to hide in the US or stay in US illegally?
sirSlani on
– At the airport, they requested to be sent to Japan.
Guess what, basic requirement for entering Japan is booking accomodations
Its42 on
Pretty much any time you’re going through customs to a new country you’re required to let them know where you’re staying and for how long. They would do the same thing to you in Korea, Japan, India, Botswana, wherever. When you come into the EU (as a non-EU citizen) you need to do the same.
pilldickle2048 on
The strip search happened out of a misunderstanding. They could have immediately taken the next flight back to their origin (New Zealand) but requested to fly to Japan instead because that was their next destination. They did not realize that the Japanese flight wasn’t until the next day which required them to spend the night in a US prison which required a strip search.
Apparently one of the girls had a meeting scheduled for when she was in the US but she said it had been cancelled. This fact combined with her working remotely prior combined with her having no hotel booked gave border agents enough suspicion to turn them away.

Oh not this again, this is older news. Yes they got deported, but not because they didn’t book a hotel, but because they were going to “work” in the USA.
According to many other sources, they signed a protocol of their questioning that stated they were going to work in the us, after arriving in Japan, they get the protocol and said, that this was not what they were saying at all.
NOW COMES THE BUT
They didn’t have enough funds to make the border officers believe they were able to finance the vacation in the USA, they didn’t have enough money. And said they were going to make up the money with some social media or remote work. So they INDEED intended to work in the US, that’s what working in the US means.
Same thing happened to a Tattoo artist that was apprehended at the US/Mexico border with her tattoo tools. She said she didn’t want to work, but her social media state something different.
Coming in with a tourist visa or even ESTA does not give you eligibility to work in the US. So get the proper Visa and there is no problem.
YES social media and influenza stuff IS work. You get paid for that so you gotta pay taxed and have permission to do that in the country you currently reside.
These are not the cases of deportation we should pay attention to, these are legit reasons to deny entry,

Only been to the U.S once, six years ago. Sedona, Flagstaff, Grand Canyon, etc. Rented a Car and then setup my tent overnight in wild areas where it was allowed, and occasionally went into an AirBnb for a good shower, etc. All this was in a spontaneous manner. I guess this sort of visit modality is over then? The last time my every stay had to be recorded in the form of date stamps was in Uzbekistan in 2017 – an authoritarian state.

Two German teenage girls were detained and deported from the United States after arriving in Hawaii without a hotel reservation.
The case highlights how minor oversights can trigger severe immigration enforcement under President Donald Trump’s aggressive border policies.
