If it says it’s a private road, like the sign there, you don’t go down it unless you’ve got express permission or live along said road.

Yes, those signs are legal. Why wouldn’t they be? Trespassing isn’t legal. You might get police called on you if the people living along roads like this happen to be sticklers for the letter of the law or otherwise very sharp about maintaining their privacy.

      Yksityistie = private road.

Ei koske tieosakkaita eikä tonteille ajoa = does not apply to shareholders of the road or driving to properties.

So no you are not allowed to go there.

You can still walk on the road and in the forest. We have this thing called “jokaisen oikeudet”.

You can ride a bicycle on the road, this sing prohibits motorized vehicles.

Yes this sign is legal, it’s most likely because it’s a privately maintained road and the road owners (tiekunta) have decided that they don’t want people who aren’t paying for the maintenance to use their road.

If you get caught driving on it you can get a ticket for it. Very unlikely, but also is disrespectful to the property owners to drive on a private road just for your own convenience. There are plenty of public and non-restricted private gravel roads.

I believe that you have the right to roam, on the road, but if you come across private buildings, such as summer cabins and their yards, you are not allowed to go there. Also, you can only walk or use a bicycle. The only motor vehicles allowed are for people who have property there and maintenance of the road and forest.

I could be (and very probably am) wrong…

      But good question though. 🙂

      1. If google maps i.e whatever you’re using says that road xyz takes you from place a to b, you’re fine!
      2. They are legal. Those signs are there to tell that those roads in auestion are actually maintained by private persons, instead of government. They don’t prohibit people using them unless said otherwise. This sign in question does so, but I highly doubt no one will care if you use the road anyway.
      3. Bicycles are fine, as long as you don’t enter someones property, which is not illegal, but some Finns might consider that awkward.
      4. Worst thing that I can think of, is that someone comes over to you and says you shouldn’t be here or turn back. No fines or punishments unless you break the law somehow.

      1. I don’t think you do.

      2. Completely legal.

      3. No.

      4. If you get caught by someone who really doesn’t want you to be there you might be charged for trespassing or unlawful driving. That risk is pretty slim though, what’s most likely is that you won’t see anyone, followed by getting a wave from someone who doesn’t know you’re there illegally, followed by getting scolded by one of the owners, most likely an old man.

The sign tells you what’s going on, leave your bike and request an audience at your own peril.

We tend to enjoy our little slice of heaven, city folk already have their cities, so why bother us that want to be left alone?

    8. The firrst thing that I want to say is that please respect these signs and don’t go trespassing. Some people enjoy their privacy and don’t want strangers wandering on threir yards and roads!

      1. You can try to use google maps streetview to check wheter or not there are signs at the start of the roads.
      2. The signs are legal. If you really want to check the info about a certain road you can buy a “Access rights unit extract” (Käyttöoikeusyksikköote in Finnish) from “National Land Survey of Finland” Maanmittauslaitos.
      3. Yes that is allowed by “jokamiehen oikeudet”. I suggest for you to read them if you before you do more exploring, they tell you pretty much what you are allowed to do outdoors and where to do it.
      4. If you enter private property you are trespassing and can be punished for that by the Finnish Law.

What I would suggest is just sticking to the public roads and driving on them. There are a lot of beautiful public roads for you to drive on a motorcycle so I don’t see any reason for you to go and harass people who just want to be alone at their on land. Those roads are also maintained and more safe to ride on. Private roads do not need to be maintained so for example if you crashout while driving on one without a permission because the road is in bad condition you can’t get any compensation for that.

    9. Plenty of gravel roads in eastern Finland without restrictions. Private roads are show as in the picture(official sign) and are off limits to drive by car or motorbike. But you can go by bicycle or on foot. Majority of smaller roads are private in some form or other.

      Here some basic info:

That sign is “no motor vehicles”, with some stuff about that in the signs below it.

If you are not driving a motor vehicle… That sign is irrelevant to you.

You are not allowed to go to the yards of other people. Also military areas and fenced off areas like mines or landfills and so on are generally very much off limits. This is regardless of any signs.

Depending on the situation, you should generally obey “yksityisalue” or “private property” signs, but that’s more out of basic politeness.

Read up “jokamiehenoikeudet” for full details.
