I feel sometimes I need to interpret these stories. Here’s the bottom line (warning: Is a lot more boring that journo’s story).
The judge: “If I gave you immediate custody today, bearing in mind the time that you have already spent in custody, it is likely that you would be eligible to be released in the course of the next few days and weeks.”
In other words – shit-ass dude has already spent _so damn long in custody awaiting trial_, he’s already effectively served the time the judge would sentence him to, and giving the recommended sentence would result in the dude just being released in a few days anyway when you include ‘time served’ so judge didn’t bother. That’s about it, I’m afraid.
Bloke is still a total cunt obviously – but the bottom line is he’s already served the normal sentence for the shittery he got up to. He just did it before it got to trial!

Leaves woman permanently scarred by throwing an object at her, takes cocaine, threatens her with a knife, gives her a black eye, threatens police officers during arrest, etc. on top of being a serial offender for decades. Serves equivalent of 18 months.
Tory councillor sends a tweet for which there is no proof of any victim, gets 31 months for her first offense. And that’s on a reduced sentence via plea.

I don’t feel safe knowing that people with 36 convictions, many of them related to violence, are walking free on the streets. It baffles me that these people not locked up for life.
6 years ago, one of my friends walked out of his house and got his face smashed in and jaw broken by a thug he had never met before who had been to prison over 10 times for violence crimes. The thug only got 8 months for smashing my friends jaw in. It’s absolutely amazing that people who do stuff like this are allowed to walk free so quickly.
