MEPs call for all EU funds to be cancelled for Hungary

      Status: 21.05.2025 06:00

In a cross-party fire letter submitted to ARD’s Brussels studio, MEPs are calling for all EU funding to be cancelled for Hungary once and for all. Previous sanctions have had no effect.

It is a very clear request to the EU Commission to put Hungary under more pressure. MEPs from the Christian Democrats, Social Democrats, Liberals and Greens want to cut off Viktor Orban’s government’s funding for good, says FDP European politician Moritz Körner. ‘Anyone who shows zero concern for respecting EU values deserves zero euros from the EU budget,’ he explains.

It is about protecting the financial interests of the EU and thus of European taxpayers in accordance with the applicable legislation, says Green MEP Daniel Freund. He initiated the letter and is one of the most vehement advocates of the rule of law in the EU Parliament. Due to rampant corruption in Hungary and the lack of an independent judiciary, billions of euros of EU funds due to the country have already been frozen in recent years.

      ‘More attacks every week’

‘However, we can see that nothing has improved on the ground in the two and a half years that sanctions have been in place,’ says Freund. On the contrary, we are now seeing “further attacks on independent civil society, free media, freedom of expression and the independence of the judiciary on a weekly basis. And that is why we are now saying very, very clearly: this must end.”

Rigorous action against minorities and NGOs

Encouraged not least by the US President, Orban is taking increasingly rigorous action against minorities and non-governmental organisations. In mid-March, his government passed a law that severely restricts the freedom of assembly and bans the Pride Parade planned for June, which is to demonstrate for the rights of gay, bisexual and transgender people, among other things.

A few days ago – on 13 May – the leadership in Budapest also stepped up its crackdown on non-governmental organisations, which it sees as a threat to the country’s sovereignty. This gives the government the opportunity to blacklist NGOs, impose financial restrictions on them and, if necessary, impose sanctions.

It is the only way to give the opposition a fighting chance, it benefits Hungary on the long run to stop these funds while Orbán is in power.

I live in Hungary and this should have been done 10 years ago. I hope the EU helps in removing them from any kind of decision making.

Just do it already, you are wasting money lining his pockets!

At last, some movement. It is vital that the EU stands for something, and those who can’t subscribe to its values must either have the grace to withdraw or be placed in a position where they can’t impede majority wishes. This means that qualified majority must replace anonymity. But that is for the longer term. The cancelling of funds is a good interim measure.
