What sort of essential services they provide these days? What’s the value they are adding for the tax payer?
With all the banks closing locations the post office has been like the Swiss army knife of financial services, the digital age is going to give them less and less customers but I think they need to offer even more services to stay relevant.
Some countries national post office allows you to collect/ship with other carriers like DHL/UPS and the post office gets a fee from them, could be another revenue stream.
Smaller post offices, the majority of the foot traffic is used to collect social welfare or pensions. I don’t see the government switching this digital any time soon to prevent fraud and people claiming outside the country so I’d imagine they’ll keep them afloat.
The majority of small post offices are franchises that are owned and run by small businesses to create footfall for their other commercial operations like central or supervalu’s.
The mismanagement of central post office operations and the impact of overstaffed middle management tied to union strength has hamstrung the organisation from being efficient and cost avoidant.
It’s the same story for all semi – and former state organisations.
The digitisation of the operations has again been hamstrung by all of the above due to political capital being used to slow down the inevitable end state of fewer people with better efficiency and quality.
An Post wheel this out every few years to fund high average salaries and pension commitments they can not afford to rid themselves of through redundancy programs.
You can literally print off a shipping label on the a post website and get it picked up the next day or drop it in a postal box. Kind of makes going into the office redundant
