I read the IT piece on this tragic young man, who would likely be still here (according to his brother) if he had just been seen in a timely manner and given a bit of support. As a person who has had “a few” psych admissions in my 20’s with PND I know well the feeling of sitting there all evening and overnight, waiting for the duty psych to come in on rotation the next morning.

All the time your mind telling you to cop on and stop making a fuss, look at these people with their fingers hanging off and they probably think i’m here for a bit of attention was how I felt anyway.

After the crash in 2008 they completely defunded any “extras” that they had previously offered , well in my experience anyway. They got rid of a craft group and a day group (art/ cinema/ meal cooking) that would have been the only place some of the regular people from the local psych ward would have positive / any interaction with others apart from seeing their health care team.

I’m heartbroken by this story for Adam and his family, and for all the other people who experience the same in public Irish hospitals. Everyone deserves care, and people who are thinking of killing themselves should not be left for hours waiting. I really hope that Adams Law gets passed, it makes perfect sense and would not only save lives but save a lot of misery.
