The march began last week as a kind of mission to “protect national unity,” after Viktor Orbán admitted in a speech that he had deceived ethnic Hungarians living outside the country. Péter Magyar, now the leading figure of the Hungarian opposition, is walking 300 kilometers from Budapest to Oradea (Nagyvárad), Romania, where he will be welcomed by the Hungarian minority living there.

(And here, I/we would also like to take the opportunity to congratulate our Romanian brothers and sisters for voting in favor of staying in the EU!)

I’ve already written about this, and I don’t want to spam the sub, but this is a big deal for us here in Hungary. While the Orbán regime is doing increasingly insane things — right now trying to censor the press and openly launching a program for internet trolls called “Fight Club” (yes, the film analogy fits perfectly: a mentally unwell man gathers exploitable people around his ideology) — in the midst of all this, I’d like to show you, Europe, the other face of our country: the people who are working to keep us with you.

Péter Magyar’s march continues. He himself seems to be learning and evolving a lot, talking to countless people, listening to their concerns, and trying to respond thoughtfully. The whole journey is streamed live online, followed by thousands — sometimes tens of thousands — every day.

There have been beautiful moments: children played music for him, welcomed him with sweets (they even did a sour candy challenge for him), and Péter shook hands with everyone. Elderly people clap for him, wave from their cars, and for two weeks now, there hasn’t been a single incident — everyone’s been friendly. Along the way, the group plants flowers, sometimes announcing the League of the Peaceful as a response to Orbán’s madness. They’re welcomed with food and often with gifts. Today, a small village greeted them with cannon salutes and traditional folk reenactors.

He often jokes about Orbán and his madness along the way, too. And there’s a growing openness to this — even in regions and small villages where Orbán’s party used to be the strongest.

There’s a lot of interest. Hope has been rekindled in us — we trust, and we dare to hope again: **Europe, we want to come back!**

Kinder, provided you’re still white, preferably christian, and hetero.

For any nonhungarians , a huge driving force behind Magyar is that he doesn’t stand for European values the og opposition just what the domestic crowd wants to hear.
