A band-aid solution. The proper solution would be the “adoption” of those orphaned media platforms with or without their reformatting for the needs of the contemporary realities on the continent.
I’m 98% certain that the US ditched them for good.
Can’t let good state propaganda go to waste.
Despite the censorship in the past (the Cold War), RFE/RL is doing great work in many countries today. Incredible corruption investigations in Ukraine, human rights investigations in Asia and the Middle East, fairly neutral panels.
For many people, open propaganda like that of RT will be unacceptable. Russians communicate simply and hit on the topics that an uninformed viewer wants to hear.
So something like RFE/RL is the best we can afford. And we need it for countries that are not free. We are keeping the lights on in terrible countries and at the same time getting truthful information from there.
Alright, stupid question. I understand RFE as a cold war thing. Is it still relevant? Do they put out actual radio broadcasting? Does anybody listen to it? What’s it like? Because I’m sure here in Austria most people don’t even know the name.
