What a shit show to put it crudely this whole thing has been. We are going to pay them money after we give over the territory. Stupid deal
corbynista2029 on
The whole reason we are signing this deal is so the _Americans_ will get security guarantee in the region, not us. It’s this “special relationship” that compels us to pay for American military strategic position in the Indian Ocean. Absolutely insane they aren’t the ones footing the bill.
spectator_mail_boy on
Perhaps we should pay them even more because they had to wait a bit longer for the court to give the go ahead?
Seems sensible.
I’m glad the adults are in charge.

I guess I get to say it again here then…
The thinking behind this arrangement is to move this situation in line with the 21st century legal standard rather than the 18th century one. Most developed countries (including China) hold legal leases on land that is outside of their territory. The idea is that the international community have a stronger incentive to support a 21st century legal claim to the use of the islands than they do a 18th century colonial one. If we have a lease, that we are paying for, then this solidifies the future of British and American use of the territory.
Absolutely disagree with this strategy by all means. I also consider it suspicious, but I am straight up sick to death of people saying, “wHy sTarMer gIv 4 no rissen?”. It is very clearly about bringing the status of the Island and military bases there up to a 21st century legal standard. Wrong or right, that’s the intention.

This whole thing has been a complete shit show by Starmer and the Tories. They’ve had no Parliamentary debate on it, they haven’t included the Chagossians, and they’ve given no public explanation as to why they’re handing the islands over.
If they had any sort of sense they’d have cancelled the deal after months of Mauritius’s bullshit but instead we’re now paying them for something we already own. They should’ve let the Chagossians return to the other islands and turn them into our very own version of the Maldives.

Now let’s invade Mauritius and annex the land. Because I guess that’s fine.

This is such an unforced political error for Labour.
People will see this as treasonous. I know I do.

Shouldn’t we be the ones getting paid? We’re the big dicks with the control of the island. What is Mauritius gonna do?
I’m pretty centralist, but this deal has made me email my previous MP (out of the country currently, hoping to return soon).. who is Labour.
Along with probably reconsider ever voting Labour? Which is insane really; as Starmer should be someone who appeals to me.
Extremely disappointed, the optics are insane. Pushing money abroad when people are struggling. It’s a fucking joke. I cannot believe Starmer and Co are just handing reform next election. For shame.

Awful news. I’ve been following the Chagosians’ struggles since I just started studying law. Having been utterly messed around by the UK over decades, they now find their homeland given away without any consultation with them to an island nation far distant from it with little obvious claim to it.
All for what? A decision of an international court that was not binding – and not binding because it had no jurisdiction over the matter.

How is this a ‘deal’? That would imply we are getting something out of it. They should be paying us for the territory. Ridiculous.

Oh good, so the US will take ownership of it before long, and all the natural habitats will become “expendable due to operational requirements.” It’s already a bloody nightmare trying to stop them from destroying the place, and they only rent it🤦♂️. Yet another shortsighted agreement by a British government! Why can’t we learn that just turning our backs on a country after many generations is a bad idea!

When will this country realise that following international law doesn’t win you anything?

We’re going to charge the Americans rent, right? Or are we giving the islands to Mauritius, giving them money to lease it back, all for the richest country in the world to keep their military base there for free. It’s absurd, this primarily serves US interests, they should cover the cost.

Looks like the only thing we get out of this is kudos from the international community?

Well there you have it, we are getting absolutely bent over to please countries that don’t like us. No mention of security implications, just people are supposedly very upset.

This is a really , really stupid decision. Mauritius has no real claim to the Islands, if they did this would be a very different story.
It’s only because it’s seen as a win for de-colonisation that it has been so heavily pushed (which is bizarre given the Chagossian people gain absolutely nothing). The only winner is the Mauritian government who get £100m quid a year for a century. It makes the UK look weak, handing over sovereign territories and paying for the prove page.
I understand the wheels were in motion before Starmer came into power, but I really think he would’ve blocked it. I fail to see what the negative repercussions of that would be
Stoocpants on
No referendum. No accountability. Not a care in the world.
Starmer is a bought and paid for PM, who hates Britain, British people and the idea of Britons. He’s an aspiring Eurocrat, and will divest as much sovereignty as he can before probably going to live in tax-payer funded housing, on a comfy government stipend and pension.
When the going gets tough, Starmer will look out for Starmer.

I’m struggling to understand the Mauritian claim to the islands – from what I’ve read they were loosely grouped together during the colonial period, but the distance between them is over 2000km (about as far as the UK to the Azores). Can anyone enlighten me?

Very good, once they decide to go off their colonial past and stop holding foreign land and giving it to others. The ICJ made its decision in 2019 so comply with it or pay up.
Stop with this double standards and quit supporting nations that expell people and replace them with scum. Just a reminder this would have NEVER happened if your government decided to let the chagossians LIVE in peace instead of building a colonial military base for ANOTHER country (USA), great self respect shown here by this country, paying for someone else to use their military aren’t yall ashamed one bit

I cannot believe we’re paying a lease back for that military base…
Is anybody able to explain the benefits to the UK public? What do we get out of it? Apart from a military base that primarily serves American Interests.
