Can someone explain to me why we’re paying for this and how this benefits us in any way whatsoever.

Talks are ongoing to cede control of the Falklands to Barbados for a yearly stipend of 16 billion pounds, increases linked to the cost of UK electricity.

Just remember every time the government announces more cuts… £100 million a year for 100 years on this deal…
ImpactAffectionate86 on
The weakest and most detrimental ‘deal’ a government has ever negotiated for us.
A deal that doesn’t benefit us or the native Chagossians. Mauritius (who have never inhabited the islands) and their mates China must be absolutely pissing themselves at us.
£100m a year for us to feel slightly better about ourselves. Sick of it.

This whole deal is very weird. A lot going on here that neither we nor the press are privvy to.
Jurassic_Bun on
What are Labour even trying to do here.
>Measured against these costs, he argues, this deal is “very good value for money”.
What the hell is Starmer talking about? Is he trying to gaslight us? Value for what? We owned the islands.
>He says that the base’s location provides “immense global reach”, making it a “unique asset” for British security.
>”I welcome the long-term certainty that this treaty brings. It will help the British Armed Forces in our efforts to support stability abroad and security at home,” Hockenhull says.
It it’s so special why did we give it away?
>Starmer says if the UK did not agree to a deal, it would not have been able to prevent other nations from setting up a base on the island.
I am going to lose my mind.
They say
>”By agreeing to this deal now on our terms, we’re securing strong protections, including from malign influence, that will allow the base to operate well into the next century, helping to keep us safe for generations to come,” he says.
Who are these secretive “malign” powers that threaten the islands but magically let us keep the base there?
The whole thing stinks to high heavens. This mentality is whats heading them towards a Tory wipeout. All so we can get a reform government to come in and collapse the remaining union.
Gibraltar and Falklands must be shitting themselves if these are the justifications they are using.
>Starmer says that the “first duty of a prime minister is to keep the country safe” and the Diego Garcia island is vital for this with its capabilities having “already had huge impact around the globe in relation to combating and defeating our adversaries.”
Another incredibly reasoning from Starmer.
>Britain’s armed forces are “safer and stronger because of what we do in Diego Garcia”, he adds.
All they have done is make a great argument on why we should NOT hand over the islands.
> The government says there is a “binding obligation” in place to ensure the base is never undermined.
Starmer you made a deal for 99 years, that’s not forever mate.
>In it, Defence Secretary John Healey says “international legal proceedings could have rendered the base inoperable” which would have effected the UK’s national security.
Could doing a massive amount of legwork.
RE Falkland this is very worrying
>Put simply, it believed the military base at Diego Garcia would otherwise become unworkable. Ministers feared an “advisory opinion” by the UN’s International Court of Justice – that the Chagos Islands belonged to Mauritius – would soon become a legally binding judgement by a special tribunal that governs international laws of the sea.
Despite the votes the UN officially calls for dialogue on these islands yearly.
Basically win at the UN and Britains yours for the grab I guess.

If it gets over the line, Labour will face the same fate in the next election as the Tories did in the last one.

What amount is America paying since I’ve heard they also use Diego Garcia?

Absolutely unforgivable.
This is genuinely one of the most bafflingly pointless and self-defeating things a British government has ever done. And there’s stiff competition on that front.

£101million a year to give away our own fucking territory. Keir Starmer is absolutely spineless.

This absolute bellend has no leg to stand on now for saying ‘conservatives did this’ or ‘black hole this’ when they are literally throwing away 3-4 billion pound net! That’s not even taking into account inflation on this. It could easily go past 10bn over course of how long we will be paying
haphazard_chore on
Fuck Starmer. He’s a traitor. Never forget that this guy thinks we don’t have money for you but we have money to hand away sovereignty of our land to Mauritius along with £101 million a year. Oh, and let’s not forget that this will rise with inflation for 99 years!

No vote, no self-determination for the Chagos Islanders. Just got handed over on a silver plate to Mauritius.

The optics on paying a foreign power £101 million annually to rent back our own fucking island (so the yanks can use it, no less) is insane. Does Farage have a hand up Starmer’s ass puppeteering him? He’s practically running their campaign for them.

Billions and billions of UK taxpayers money given to another country. Starmer is a disgrace.

A very bad day for the marine life of the [Chagos Marine Protected Area](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chagos_Marine_Protected_Area), one of the largest marine wildlife reserves of the world. They’re now under the control of a nation internationally famed for both corruption and overfishing.

R9281 on
I doubt people really care about the islands that much, but are the US going to be paying the UK for this at all or what? Or are we going to be paying this money for the base and just handing it over for free to the US?
Klutzy-Notice-8247 on
Oh well, that’s Labour out of power for the next two election cycles. A party that struggles to wrestle with the public’s belief that they’re anti British, paying another country to take British land. Yeah, the optics look very, very bad for this one.
We’re snowballing head first into a Reform government.

Absolutely pathetic. Giving away land and paying so the yanks can have a military base. Fucking idiotic

We needed this Island , especially now we’re in difficult times with geo politics and countries on the verge of war with the west. Its purely virtue signaling from the likes of David Lammy who has a lack of understanding of the threat posed and the islands usefulness if we do enter into conflict . There’s also the issue of it original residents consent on the matter which has been totally ignored . This is a massive mistake .

People are actually defending this deal? £250million front loaded this year. Fine, give it away. But paying them a quarter of billion, then hundreds of millions every year after that? What strain is Starmer smoking?

I’ve not heard a single reason as to why this deal was going ahead.
I listened to Private Eye go into detail about it and even they were absolutely flummoxed as to why we desperately trying to give so much money away.
I get giving the island back, however why is it costing such vast sums to basically “rent it”
GJonesie99 on
I’m ok with this as long as it is paid with the money from the foreign aid budget.

Smooth move, paying billions of pounds to give away our own territory. This has been a stupid idea since the beginning, it remains a stupid idea and sadly I guess at this point there’s no fixing it.
The ‘soft power’ argument was dubious at every stage (Mauritius’s claim is pretty weak) but it’s just total nonsense in an age of Russia, Israel, China and the US totally ignoring international law. We should just have told them where to stick it.
