      > Conservative shadow chancellor Mel Stride said: “Instead of reining in spending, the Labour chancellor has piled billions onto the national debt by fiddling the fiscal rules and maxing out the national credit card.”

“Look at her, struggling to clean up the mess that we made”

Just so you know, Capital Economics, who are giving the warning, is ran by Roger Bootle, a man who has had several advisory roles for conservative governments.

We should just ditch the fiscal rules. They’ve not helped us and are preventing any proper positive changes to the economy.

I’m currently paying 30pc tax, make it 80, why not, let poor and middle class people suffer

    4. XenorVernix on

I’m sure we get one of these warnings every other week.

If there’s one thing for certain in politics it’s that taxes will keep rising no matter who is in power. Our politicians are addicted to spending our money and always want more.

Imagine increasing revenue by 5bn, over just 3m, and still being down overall because your commitments to pensioners are going up so much faster.

And when you know this news is about to break, you partially U-turn on the one small thing you did to start to actually solve the root problem.

The UK state pension in 1998 (when the fuel allowance was introduced) was £64.70 per week. Adjusted by inflation that’s £121.90. The actual state pension in 2024 was £230.25.
So their real terms income has nearly doubled, and yet £300 a year in free cash given to every UK pensioner? Ooohhhh nooo we can’t touch that. This massive ponzi scheme, along with exploding housing/sickness benefits bills, is why the deficit in daily spending is so huge even with the tax burden being the highest it’s been since WW2.
But Labour try to sort #1 by making WFA means tested, #2 by changing eligibility criteria for PIP to make it more sustainable, and #3 by changing planning law to make it possible to build more housing? Everyone gives them shit for it.

This country is fucked, not because of the government, but because of its blindingly stupid electorate.

As much as I don’t fancy paying more taxes, at least I can actually see Labour attempting to improve the country..

Better than the crap we’ve had for the past 14 years where any tax increase was primarily to pay for Tory backhanders to their mates.

Labour are trying to destroy this country on purpose it seems

Heh, wait till the public realise how much of ‘GDP’ is imputed rent aka, literally doesn’t exist.

    10. Cryptocaned on

I literally cannot. I’m barely getting by as it is, let alone.having to pay more tax. Every time I get a pay rise, my outgoings seem to magically rise to the same amount even though I do fuck all other than work and pay bills.

Wouldn’t be entirely unfair targeting the own-a-home and holiday place in France, middle-to-upper-class wannabes.

They’ve been living a charmed existence for decades now after all.

These the same experts that didnt predict the higher rate of borrowing

No one cares about Corbyn, he’s not coming back. The benefits system needs an overhaul because too many people are taking the piss. I’m not over the specifics so perhaps Labour’s cuts are indeed too harsh, but it’s simply not sustainable to keep going as it is. Anyway is conversation has drifted from why won’t the public just wait a few years to my own political opinion, which is less important

    14. Bingogango80 on

How much more do they think we have?

The tax burden is at its highest point in 70yrs and the government’s response appears to be “the last tranche of tax rises didn’t work, but the next round definitely will.”

    15. dalehitchy on

Well they tried to reduce the bills by means testing pensioners but they want freebies for life. So those working and struggling will have to pay for it.

      Gotta fund that boomer lifestyle
