Quote: When tourists say they wish they could take a piece of their favorite place home with them, sometimes they mean it a bit too literally.

Belgium’s picturesque city of Bruges has issued a request that tourists stop stealing cobblestones from its UNESCO-recognized medieval streets.

Local politician Franky Demon says an estimated 50 to 70 cobblestones disappear per month — even more during peak season — and it costs 200 euros (about $225) per square meter to replace them and fix the damage.

it’s not like they’re even ancient stones they would’ve been replaced several times at that point

Someone at the airport probably: why is it so heavy? Are you carrying rocks?

The funny thing is, these are not the real cobblestones that used to be here in Bruges.
This size is 3 to 4 times smaller than the original cobblestones

Last week some tourists were stopped at Lisbon airport for trying to do the same thing, this seems so insane to me

Simple fix, make it illegal with possible prison time. Grab one or two and make an example out of them. Send that shit all over the news and social media.

What the hell? Go to any random European old city and you will probably find some streets or a town square with cobblestones. It’s not some incredibly rare thing found only in one town

    9. Are cobblestone such a foreign concept for people outside of Europe? These things are everywhere. And most of the time they are only years old on busy streets, because they get frequently replaced.

They’re disgusting. I once had to confront an American tourist who pocketed a piece of brick at one of the NAZI concentration camp ruins in Poland.
