Can we actually expect it to now be run for the public’s needs rather than profit?

This is the Treasury funded railway. The policy of successive governments over the last 25 years is to increase the proportion of the railway paid for by the passenger, reducing the taxpayer subsidy. That won’t change. This is the Treasury that said we don’t need ticket offices, we don’t need WiFi on trains, save money, lower the service, do less maintenance, run fewer services.
Expect British Rail – under funded, crap service, fewer passengers.

Can have lower fares when utilisation drops below 90% again.
Nationalisation == subsidy, especially when we are already capacity limited, not demand limited.
