Shorts are way more common.
You are required to wear [this swimsuit](https://www.stuttgarter-zeitung.de/media.media.06081bf5-d2ce-459a-b55f-61aad7e9aa94.original700.jpg) at all public pools in germany. Everything else will get you thrown out and possibly in legal trouble.
na swimshorts are fin, speedos are more of an “older generation” thing.
My dad wears them only and good lord, they leave nothing to the imagination

Actually most men wear shorts at public pools/ beaches … speedos are common in competitive swimming.
It must be swimwear if you go to a public pool, you can’t use your basketball shorts. But plenty of bathing shorts available. Haven’t worn speedos since school sport swimming.
