The apprenticeships scheme has struggled because there are very few educators of any quality involved.

Offering Level 7 qualifications to only under 21s really puts a lot of pressure to pick your path, as most people shouldn’t be doing a masters qualification until 23+ years old.

Apprenticeships should only be available for skilled roles. The number of businesses who’ve started doing apprenticeships for rubbish like “Customer Service” so they can get government grants and pay workers less than minimum wage is just abusive of the system and the workers.

I get what they are trying to do but it seems low priority on the urgency scale.

What I don’t get is why they’re not encouraging and incentivising older people into upleveling apprenticeships especially those in their mid-20s or 30s who’ve spent time in an industry. These are people who would have thought it through and are ready to commit.

Or even people who have spent some time in that industry and realised it’s not for them, and want to retrain. Why wouldn’t the gov want to support that right now, especially when Ai is coming hot and fast for a lot of peoples jobs? I read there is close to 15% of 19-25 year olds out of work, education and training and the apprenticeship route could solve all three if it was supported and regulated better so they supported people onto them and through them, and culled all the waste of time ones.

I personally know a lot of people that went straight into a master’s after uni to buy time without knowing what they wanted to do in life and I feel like this could be a situation where a youngster is prioritised because its cheaper for an employer to take on, who may not even stay with the company or in the industry post completion.
