for 2045( zero carbon economy) , Fraunhofer estimates Germany might need 300 GW wind power, which in today’s terms would mean 60,000 wind turbines at current capacity of new turbines
that could further reduce as turbines get bigger and bigger( possibly halving the required number of wind turbines?)

Didn’t the huge drop happen after Merkel appointed some corrupt idiot to the energy ministry?

Germany’s onshore wind capacity reached approximately 63 GW in 2024, with a significant annual increase of around 3.25 GW, reflecting ongoing growth despite policy uncertainties. This expansion contributed to Germany maintaining its position as Europe’s leading wind power producer, with over 28,000 turbines in operation.
The Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy in Germany changed parties three times throughout this timeperiod, and it really fucking shows what an utter desaster the conservative CDU created and how they brought the transition towards renewables to a complete standstill:
Until 2017: SPD (S&D), 13133 MW
2017 to 2021: CDU (EPP), 7.890 MW
2021 to 2025: Grünen (Greens), 30.012 MW
So the Greens/SPD achieve more in a single years despite being blocked at every chance by their coalition partner than the CDU in four years with no opposition.
Really bleak prospects for the next four years, cause CDU is back, and so it russian gas and coal.

Meanwhile in all of the years shown in this chart Flamanville 3 was still under construction.

That’s fantastic but we also need to urgently upgrade our energy infrastructure.
In my region, they have to regularly shut off the wind turbines because our energy grid can’t deal with all the electricity they would be producing on really windy days.
I reckon there are similar issues all over Germany, so hopefully those 500b we secured will be spent where it’s actually needed.

besides the growth in capacity , the turbines themselves are getting bigger in output, thus the same capacity needs fewer turbines
from 1990 to 2024, average capacity of a new wind power turbine grew 20 times ( from 0.25MW to 5.1 MW)
