Is this more complicated though, in a sense that Americans have to continue to pay taxes in the US whilst working overseas?
Although I imagine there’s a loophole somewhere, especially for those who earn more than the rest of us.

Yeah get those 3 people and that lab donkey quick!

    3. pilldickle2048 on

We are acting at light speed to acquire talent fleeing the United States. We have secured funding to bring over A DOZEN scientists!

Every fůcking day it seems there is a stupíd article like this on this sub from some naïve user who hates the USA.

Here is the reality and the bottom line. Europe doesnt offer anywhere near the same pay as the USA and until they do they can’t even begin to have this conversation. Europe offers poverty wages compared to the USA for jobs like these.

    5. Vaestmannaeyjar on

Won’t work. Getting people in would be easy enough, but the research budgets in the EU are ridiculously low, and that’s something researchers actually care about as much as their own salary.

    6. narullow on

      I very much doubt that.

Americans like to talk about it a lot but the people that matter the most would be absolutely miserable in EU because it would mean massive decline in their living standard.

I can’t see it happening. American-born, but grew up in Europe and now I’m back in Michigan. I’ll eventually come back to Europe once I’ve met my financial goals, but European salary are far too depressed for anyone with a skill set desires in the labour market to consider it.

I’m in Michigan and admittedly I work 100% remote, but I make 3x here than I did in London. And my pay in London was above average in my field. I’m a wage slave and already see it as a bad trade off, I can’t imagine doing it as a talented start-up founder.

When it comes to tech, Europe just isn’t a single-market in the way it is for goods.

      >Europe can capture the US brain drain — if it acts fast

So it can’t capture the US brain drain

I mean, the EU ? Act fast ?

    9. WhereasSpecialist447 on

like always, europe wont do anything. BUT THEY will have “discussions”! a lot of them.

Those who mention money are missing a crucial point, academic freedom. As a mathematician I would rather be middle class in my country than rich in USA if I have to fudge my results so that I don’t contradict the rhetoric of the government. I would think a lot of medical researchers would feel the same with RFK in charge of the health department.

    11. OliveCompetitive3002 on

What US Brain Drain exactly? I’ve read about it for months but haven’t seen any reliable data so far. Just tons of what ifs and maybes.

    12. 1LimePlease on

Europe could focus on cultivating the resources it already has. I left academia because funding is awarded to only 1 out of every 10 applications – physics

    13. schtickshift on

All those tech bro refugees from Silicon Valley are landing on the shores of Europe with nothing but the clothes on their backs and three 40ft containers in transit.

    14. Aware-Computer4550 on

Just wait it out for 3 more years. Some of this is so stupid it won’t last through the next administration whether it’s republican or Dem.

    15. Jaded-Initiative5003 on

Our unis are already packed with Americans in the UK. What more can we do

    16. Big-Conflict-4218 on

And then there’s a subset of people who were expecting matching salaries of the US in the EU oof

    17. NoTown3670 on

It may not be plausible to snatch academics from the US since they still have huge freedoms and funding but Europe can have a larger slice of the pie when it comes to China, India and the rest of the World. Most of the “extraordinary brains” I’ve met from Turkey have always considered Europe a safer space for a future. Welfare state over luxury spending. Safety over fancy campuses. Bikes over automobiles 🤌

    18. Won’t work. Smart people don’t want to be censored by European governments and not life under Sharia Law.

    19. djingo_dango on

Wake me up when the next Einstein (or Linus) moves from US to any European country

    20. jeremiasalmeida on

It will not work, because Europe is in the same path as USA. In every country fascists are getting more popular. This international fascist have the same ideas .

    21. Dear_Company_547 on

Europe should aim to attract the best minds regardless of where they’re from, by offering competitive salaries and positions and creating excellent research environments. That’s how the US got ahead in the first place – by taking in the smartest and best from elsewhere. It’s not just about money, it’s also about immigration and residency rules, as well as a welcoming work environment.

    22. Tracerneo on

What if we don’t want them? You know, I and other Europeans already here would like the jobs, and to be invested in, not some American upset with the government they elected and “fleeing” into comfortable position.

    23. North-Temperature938 on

yeah US brains can’t wait to work on much less funded projects in EU
