I hope she stops this. I’m sure she’s a good person, I’m sure she means well, I’m sure she’s doing it for all the right reasons but the people that she’s trying to reach with this couldn’t give a fuck about her. They literally don’t care if she dies or does permanent damage to herself. She’s better staying healthy and fighting her fight a b different way and staying alive.

It’s fairly common for people in the wellness community to do seven day water fasts.
10, 14 and 21 day fasts are also the goal of many.

I fully support the passing of the Occupied Territories Bill, but this is fucking stupid. There’s no way it’s going to have an effect, and if she keeps going, she’s going to do damage to herself. Merits of the specific cause aside, there’s no way a democratically elected Government should pass a law (any law) just because a citizen threatens to starve themselves if they don’t. That’s blackmail, not democracy. I’m all for protesting, but this protest is inherently unethical.

You can survive for a very long time on water with electrolytes. People regularly fast for more than 15 days at a time. Your body is designed to burn fat reserves.
If she’s dizzy after six days she needs to drink more water and salts or she’ll get dehydrated.
But not too much salts or she’ll get the shits.
In any case, she probably shouldn’t have started this just before the summer recess.

Why is she always looking wistfully into the middle distance?

Does this strike anyone as being anti-democratic? Lets put aside for a minute that most of us want justice for Palestine and consider the act. This lady feels her death isn’t her responsibility, but the responsibility of the government. She feels her prefered policy on Palestine is so superior to the current position of the government that she is proposing that the government takes responsibility for her death if they don’t collectively change their policy. The role of democracy is to account for everyones voice equally. This is a very unequal form of voting, and not one the government can take responsibility for. I don’t think this stance holds for ALL hunger protests.
For example the Maze prison hunger strikers were not looking for a law change, they were looking for implementation of rights they already had. They were forcing the prison authorities and the British justice system choose between doing them an injustice PLUS killing them VS treating them equitably. A stance they already supposedly held. While I wouldn’t advocate for Hunger striking in that situation, it is not an unjust position to put the authorities in. For Sophie Ní Choimín the government has to choose between her request and democratic request. Even if she holds the same stance as me and the majority, I do not agree with one person getting more of a voice than me or the electorate.

Some people are genuinely a danger to themselves. Ireland could pass 100 bills condemning Israel and not a thing will change unless somebody forces Israel to stop or they decide to stop.

If the IOF catch wind of this I can imagine them withholding food a bit longer for the chance to kill a pesky Irish person while they’re at it
