Of all the countries in the world, why would you trust ***Russia*** to build your nuclear power plant?
They did the same shit with Yugoslavia 60 years ago.
Let them invest a lot of money so they can’t develop their own tech and then let them alone with a not working system.
Sad to see.
Why is this news now?
It was agreed like this on day one, which as in 2010.
Erdogan’s government initiated tons of major infrastructure projects like airports, bridges, hospitals, power plants and highways using the build-own-operate (BOO) model. This was just one amongst many.
They used BOO to quickly finance and build these projects with government guarantees on minimum usage/revenue. These projects were the main thrust of their election winning strategy since they came to power in 2002 and they were super effective when they advertised these major projects under the slogan “we build, they talk”.
The problem was that as with anything AKP/Erdogan has ever done, they were incredibly corrupt, with terrible terms that ended up costing the taxpayer billions, benefiting just a handful of Erdogan’s cronies and making them wildly rich through taxpayers’ money.
To give an example, they built an international airport in Kutahya under BOO scheme in 2012. The government guaranteed 1,000,000 passengers annually or pay massive penalties for every year that it didn’t match that number.
Since it was build, it only averaged 74,000 passengers annually.
This is just one example, but there are dozens like this.
