La carenza di potenza significa che dovremo scegliere tra nuove case e data center, avvertono i migliori ufficiali

I bet some will dismiss this and put the theory to the test.
Subsidise solar now
An opportunity for a new shared ownership scheme. Amazon takes an equity share in your home, fills your hot press with racks of hard drives and leeches off your solar panels. The heat generated from the networking gear heats your water and radiators.
Build more wind turbines, but solar panels on every roof… will this happen probably not
Would now be an intelligent time for the government to start investigating setting up a DARPA like agency and maybe be looking into decentralisation of network infrastructure?
Wow tough choice
To choose between something absolutely essential and something not even close… Hmm. Very tough indeed
If we start manufacturing wind turbines in Ireland then build wind farms off the coast and lay a new large cable to France to export energy to mainland Europe we would have a new booming industry and more energy than we could ever need. This would also help us move away from our reliance on large American multinationals.
Obviously we do what our corporate overlords think is best for us. Our children can live overseas.
Or, why not add more capacity. Demand has been going up steadily so we could, you know, plan for that.
Does everything infrastructure related have be a warning followed by inaction?
FG FF will always stand with big business and the billionare class. Every. Fucking. Time.
These companies would turn you into bio-fuel if it meant a 2% profit margin.
The problem I see is that AI will grow in use with robotics in industry. There will be a need for more data centres to support our standard manufacturing, pharma, medical semiconductor. By not investing in energy now we will undermine the Irish industrial business model over the next decade.
My suggestion is that the ESB needs to be supported in building more battery storage sites. While not the cleanest technology, it is currently the best available and works well with our natural wind resources. Can we get the multinationals to contribute financially to a new battery site if they want to build a datacentre or industrial site.
Can the government take some of the multinational’s contribution to act as a grant for battery installation in homes. Quick gpt search says that a powerwall in each Irish home would store 25% of our daily needs.
Until we start charging data centres a penalty charge for excess use of resources, this isn’t going to change
We’ll sooner have power shortages than have a serious think about nuclear which we need as soon as years ago.
Choose your favourite, homes or jobs, but don’t worry if you make the wrong choice, because we aren’t going to build either of them anyway!
