Despite our borders, it seems our love for German engineering is something we all agree on.

So, Opel and Ford are “cars for everyone”, BMW has own fan-base, and Fiat show’s route to Italy.

Are the data normalized? Population densities in the former GDR and the West differ greatly, so that a purely graphical representation can lead to distortions.

Bavarian consumers collectively buying BMWs is the least surprising part of this image.

That is actually really interesting.
I’m pretty naive on German politics or car history, but you can clearly see Fiat is most popular at the border with Italy, and you can see the old East/West divide still with Skoda vs Mercedes.
The most interesting one for me is how BMW is popular in S/E but Mercedes in S/W. They should appeal to similar demographics (ie the well off). I guess BMW is from Bavaria and they are patriotic in that region?

OP’s titel is wrong. The graphs don’t show the quantity, they show the rates/proportion/density.

This is very cool. Well done. I love the idiosyncracies of the brands – Fiat more in the south (proximity to Italy?). VW – where their main factories are. BMW – proximity to Munich.

NO PORSCHE? I live near Stuttgart and I’d love to see the distribution of Porsches because they are everywhere.

Unsurprisingly it looks like that cars are more popular in where they are from.
Bayerische motoren werke is very popular Bavaria, as well as Audi that is headquartered there. Mercedes in Stuttgart, Volkswagen near Wolfsburg
Opel, Ford and Toyota are very spreaden out
In east some people probably feel less connected to the former west german brands – so Renault and Skoda are relatively more popular than elsewhere
Not sure about Fiat

I wonder why the difference between Skoda, Renault and Fiat. Skoda and Renault roughly the same areas, but Fiat is inverted. Maybe the Fiat 500 is mainly sold, which falls more into the luxury/design segment?

Funny how the Iron Curtain still lingers in terms of economic disparity & brand dominance after almost 30 years.

So locals buying their local cars, makes sense despite being out of business for 10 years you still sometimes see Wiesmann here. Everywhere else that would be a bloody unicorn haha

As a Dacia owner, are there stats for these as well? I feel I see a lot of other Dacias, but that might just be because I notice them more.
Also my hometown and the area around it has large amount of Teslas. My neighborhood alone has 3-4 Teslas parked here and I see a lot more on my way to work.

Renault has with König a quite big dealer in Eastern germany.
Toyota has a rise in Berlin and surronding areas because of Uber, Taxi and other similar companies.
Skoda was known in eastern germany
Mercedes is a bigger status symbol in east Germany than BMW or Audi (personal expericence)

Knowing where the production plants are, and being aware of how incentivized employee buying is, you can explain BMW, Mercedes, Audi and Volkswagen distribution.
Mercedes have a plant in Bremen. The rest are in and around Stuttgart pretty much. Volkswagen is spread around Lower Saxony from Emden to Braunschweig, Salzgitter and of course Wolfsburg and Hannover.
Audi is mostly in Ingolstadt. BMW in Munich of course, but also in Wackersdorf and a few other places.
