This is where some of the tasteless tomatoes sold across Europe come from

Grown year-round in vast greenhouses that prioritize high yields, shelf life, and appearance over flavor. These tomatoes can be harvested multiple times a year, far beyond their natural growing cycle

Who harvests them are migrant workers (men and women) from Morocco and other African countries who often endure harsh conditions, living in makeshift shelters made of plastic, working long hours in extreme heat, and lacking basic labor protections, amounting to [modern slavery](https://youtu.be/Ly1FK9hxcq4?si=JKIs5cPkAUGm6HqB) (an interesting video in Spanish but English subtitles are available)

Not to mention the environmental impact. The greenhouses consume large amounts of water and energy in an arid region, generate massive plastic waste, and cause soil degradation

Interesting thing: the local temperature, because of all the white reflecting the sunlight and part of the heat, is slightly lower than surrounding areas and you can see it from [space](https://www.esa.int/ESA_Multimedia/Images/2011/11/Mar_de_plastico_Spain) (the link is a GIF on the European Space Agency website that shows how it changed since 1984)

“Spain does not produce anything and it is only tourism”

    3. The only structure made by human that can be visible from space!

I get it’s got a lot of criticism but what’s the alternative for now? Importing such large amounts of food from South America or Asia during winter would cost way too much to be feasible. This is like one of the breadbaskets of Europe except it provides vegetables. Sure they taste like crap a lot of the time but it’s still survivable food

The reason why Spanish fruit and vegetables have zero taste.

this is going to be a hugely unpopular opinion, but I think this is actually a superior option compared to having to ship tomatoes from the southern hemisphere in winter.

    7. They should get an extra tax and to be made mandatory for them to bring the used up plastic to collecting points! Currently a lot of the plastic is being thrown into the ocean.

When I first was in Andalusia the first time in the early 90s I was shocked by the mountains of plastic foil and trash just laying around next to the streets.

They dumped it in dry riverbeds so it would wash out to sea when it rained.
I was honestly shocked to see something like this in europe

I had no idea this existed, it’s as impressive as it is dystopian. We have a similar but way smaller place like this, the village of Matca near the city of Tecuci is more greenhouses than dwellings
