Since we drive on the Left, Shouldn’t the Steering Wheel be on the Left Hand Side of the Car?

I had been driving on the right all my life and when I moved to Ireland and switched to the left it felt weird and especially unnatural to change gears with the left hand, but now I prefer driving on the left and rules of road make more sense.

Its weird how like 5 countries drive on the correct side of the road and everyone else drives on the wrong side purely out of spite. Genuinely. The reason the uk drive.on the left is because of traditions going back as far as knights and jousting etc, and the reason france decided to drive on the right was literally “fuk those English pig dogs, lets just be awkward to piss them off”. Then most of the world adopted the french version.

Sweden changed from left to right overnight – chaos. But Nigeria did it phases, White vehicles switched on Monday, red on Tues, blue Wed and so on. Went very smooth it seems.

I wish we drove on the right so we could be compatible with the majority of other countries

Driving on the left is definitely in the minority worldwide but it’s still a sizeable chunk of the planet’s population, something like 1 in 3 drivers are on the left like us. There’s definitely a neighbourhood for it – southern/eastern Africa, the Indian subcontinent, south-east Asia and Oceania – but we’re nowhere near it

This map bugs me, as having driven a lot in Zambia, they drive on the left.

Driving on the right would open our second hand car market options up to make things so much cheaper.

It obviously can’t be done though

I heard one time that staying to the left was the norm for thousands of years because of horseback, your right hand can draw a sword and face a potential threat easily if a stranger you pass was on your right. Shipping rules mean boats keep left even to this day but I dunno the reason.

Would be happy if the whole world just drove same side. Would make renting a car and traveling so much more pleasant…

Clearly the left side of the road is the right side. I’ll die on this hill (and i live somewhere the drives the wrong way)

Whenever people ask me why Irish people drive on the wrong side of the road I just blame the British for making the roads like that

Oh… I think I owe some Americans an apology about the metric system. No matter what the rest of the world says, “the way we do it is the best way”

One must be able to properly bear arms against any man that might move against you on your travels. By keeping to the left while travelling you ensure that your horse by habit will pass your foe the same allowing a typically right handed man more convenient opportunities for stabbing.
