Mental health issues are serious and on the rise for a variety of reasons, such as poverty, or just because it is more acceptable to admit to suffering from them. There has definitely been a trend of treating everyday experiences as mental health issues though. Everyone has anxiety or experiences periods of depression, however you do not have generalised anxiety disorder just because you do not like making phone calls, claiming you do trivialises the condition and makes it harder for people to be taken seriously if they do suffer from it. Mental health language has already suffered from being co-opted (“I’m so OCD! I have to have everything near and tidy.”) and TikTok is only going to make this work if it convinces younger people that ordinary experiences are signs of serious illnesses.
