Very often, people say yes there should be because they wouldn’t personally vote for a 22-year old for president.
That logic is the same as me saying I wouldn’t vote for a FG candidate, so they can’t run either.

Why would we try to solve a problem we don’t have? The US has a big problem with fossilised politicians, we don’t.

There is a lower limit for presidents for example, the main issue with an upper limit is that as soon as you implement it, it gets complicated.
Someone with a great first term and the general public are calling out for a second term, but they cross over the age limit?

Personally I think the electorate should be left to choose who to elect.

There should be a prerequisite that they should have been a renter at some stage.

I’d rather have term limits personally. If someone wants to serve the public, after two or three terms, for example, there are plenty of other ways to do it, i.e. Work for the local council, government, etc. Career politicians shouldn’t exist IMO.

I assume you mean in the context of Ireland.
If so, there already is a natural filter, the vote.
If the public feel someone is too old, they don’t fall for them and for a more preferable candidate.
That’s the way it has to be.
If you are talking about the US system, I know enough about it to know that I don’t know enough to comment accurately. But it appears to be a nepotistic clusterfuck. That’s a problem for the American voter, not the Irish or any other one.

Yeah. The same as the one to vote.
Absolutely fucking nonsense article. Like most of the shite you post.

If you don’t want someone you think is too old/young, don’t vote for them.
If you favour a limit, surely you simply don’t trust the electorate to vote with you?
Odd_Feedback_7636 on
No. People have the right to vote for old people if that’s what they want. If people don’t want an old leader then they just won’t win the vote.

Old enough to vote, old enough to put yourself forward. In my local area, the people the parties put forward I’d never heard of, yet they had “years” of experience.

If you’re old enough to pay income tax and vote then you’re old enough to be as equal as everyone else and be treated as equal as everyone else.

Yes there definitely should be. I have a 4 year old daughter, and I don’t think people her age have the right temperament to run the government.

No but there should be term limits. Two term limits for TDs max. That’s enough time to get some roads fixed.

Absolutely, there should be age limits. Our modern world changes incredibly fast. New ideas and new technologies are getting pumped out faster and faster as the years go by. A government full of geriatrics who can’t keep up simply can’t serve our best interests. They might mean well, but they carry with them old ideas and old biases and are less likely to embrace any future they can’t wrap their head around. Don’t get me wrong, its very important we hold onto our values, our heritage and what makes Ireland, well…. Ireland but aside from that, we should be embracing the things that change us for the better. Younger minds with more plasticity and interest in emerging ideas and technology will better navigate it all.
New ideas are the most important thing to focus on. The old guard are very quick to dismiss, to the point of just saying NO. They grew up a certain way, to their minds, the best way. Which was true, back then, when they grew up. Its a very different world now. Some of these ideas, sure as hell are rubbish, but some of them have merit. Don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater. They know what they know, dont know what they dont know and are for the most part unwilling to change or broaden their horizons any further.
It’s like that meme that always gives me a giggle.
“I have 19 tabs open in my browser, 4 of them are frozen, and I dont know where the music is coming from”
Just ask someone younger, and they will sort it for you. The foundations of all our systems in Ireland haven’t really changed, so they should still work as intended. The problem is they have tacked on so much extra shite over the years they seem to be unable to navigate it all now and thus, everything starts grinding to a halt. We need fresher minds at the helm. Sharper minds better able to look down through all the extra shite, delete all the bloatware, simplify and update everything in a way that increases productivity, increases production and takes the boot off the necks of those who just want to live a happy and prosperous life.
Right now, we seem to be wading through a sea of red tape and nobody seems to have a scissors.
