I read it as: people desperately need jobs, because they cannot survive otherwise.

Spain breaks a new employment record with 21.8 million workers and unemployment falling below 2.5 million people.

Unemployment had not fallen below this barrier for 17 years, and several historical highs in social security enrolment have been surpassed, such as 3.4 million self-employed workers and 10.3 million women in work.

Another month of employment records. The labour market broke through a new ceiling in May, with a new all-time high of 21.8 million people in work enrolled in the social security system on average. In addition, registered unemployment finally fell below an important barrier for the first time in 17 years, with 2.5 million people unemployed, a figure that had not been reached since 2008. These are not the only milestones: in May, the number of self-employed workers exceeded 3.4 million for the first time, as did the number of women registered with Social Security (10.3 million) and foreign workers (3 million).

The data published on Tuesday by the Ministry of Social Security and the Ministry of Labour show a favourable May for employment and a fall in unemployment, as is usually the case in a month when temperatures begin to rise on the way to summer (this year excessively so) and which encourages hiring, especially in the hospitality sector.

“During 10 days (in May) we reached 21.8 million. These are unprecedented figures, figures of people working who have a monthly salary. As the government celebrates its seventh anniversary, it is worth reviewing where we have come from. Since 2018, we have increased the number of people in work by three million. And that is despite having faced an inflation crisis, a global pandemic and two wars in our neighbourhood,‘ said Social Security Minister Elma Saiz. ’Our policies are working,” said Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez.

The new employment record stands at 21,784,375 people registered with Social Security on average, after adding nearly 196,000 workers in May, a figure slightly lower than usual for this month.

Employment grew mainly in the hospitality sector, with 78,500 more workers (salaried and self-employed), followed by 22,000 jobs created in administrative activities and auxiliary services.

In the last year, Social Security has added 462,500 workers, maintaining a high rate of job creation at 2.2%, slightly lower than that recorded in April (2.3%). If we look at the seasonally adjusted figures, which exclude the fluctuations inherent in seasonality and the calendar, employment grew by 20,800 workers, a figure considerably lower than the 70,000 recorded in the previous month.

The Secretary of State for Labour, Joaquín Pérez Rey, welcomed the good performance of the labour market and its ‘strong resilience’ in the face of various uncertainties (compared to the inertia towards dismissal and the rapid destruction of temporary jobs in the past), such as the current tariff war initiated by the United States and the slowdown in global economic growth. Similarly, the Secretary of State for Social Security, Borja Suárez, considered that the employment figures continue to be ‘exceptional’ and ‘in the current context, even more commendable’, he pointed out.

Spain hits a new milestone is a strong sign of recovery and resilience.

    4. Good for Spain , wish we could have these results all across Europe.

This is BS, los fijos discontinuos ya no cuentan como parados. Son personas que tienen trabajo de manera estacional y no figuran como desempleados (tampoco te dicen cuantos de estos contratos existen). Los socialistas son los reyes de la manipulación de estadísticas.

Just great simple news. See? Spain goes.

Desperate oposition from right wingers making ridiculous conspiratorial claims and damaging the country non stop can stay where they are. Self hate, nonsense, lies and bigotry are not required, thanks

    8. Public Sector jobs paid with national debt, usual spanish short sightedness

Any Spanish to explain the insights please ? How was this achieved ?

I’ve read through the translated article and the comments that it’s through opening new positions for example in the administration. Are these real jobs with decent salaries ?

I’ve always thought Spain was unfortunately a country where the youth couldn’t get a decent job and had to live with their parents because of the lack of work and the costs of life.

“If you want more jobs, give the people spoons instead of shovels”

Left wing governments “fixing” unemployment by increasing the public sector in a nutshell.

adds even more to thier debt. Might be good to get gullible voters who take stats like these at face value for the next election, but not a good long term solution.

I’m in Spain right now for the first time. Honestly, I still don’t understand what Spanish people work with. I see majority of the people at home and cars being parked outside the apartments for many days straight.

Back in Sweden, most resident areas on Monday to Friday are empty since everyone is at work.

Most I’ve seen during my week here are them working in stores and some very small construction work being done.

Good stuff, though an alternative headline could be ‘record high population, record high number of people in work’

    13. I hope it is not temp jobs for summer tourism only, we need permanent jobs as well

    14. privacyisNotIncluded on

Yeah, but not for long. Most of the jobs are probably temporal summer jobs, just wait till September and unemployment is going back up

Because the purpose of life is to be a slave to the corporation?
