IRIS-T SLM has a shorter range than Patriot, but Diehl is working on a long range SLX variant with similar range as the current Patriot generation.
And Diehl is hardly the only European company working on this increasingly important issue, in all shapes and forms: missiles, cutting edge anti-air guns, interceptor drones, even laser systems, you name it. Ukraine itself has developed a very respectable drone industry, including effective interceptor drones. Not to mention the already available Israeli systems that are highly advanced and not dependent on Trump-US’s ok.
If anything, the US is only shooting itself in the foot once again by demonstrating their unreliability, which will make countries think twice about purchasing US made weapons.

Bloomberg sucks on my phone coming from Reddit… but I can confidently say whoever wrote that headline needs more development and supervision from their editor.
Is the U.S. in charge of „air cover“ (whatever the fuck that means) of „Europe force“ (whatever the fuck that is)? How can they deny it? I guess it’s a good thing that Postwar seems to be a ways off and „Europe Force“ can FITFO.

Would it be a surprise if next year the headline was “US joins Russia in war against Europe.”

It is not for Nato allies from Europe…it is about Air Cover for European Allies IN Ukraine.

anyone surprised by this? after all, they say all the time that they don’t want to get militarily involved in Ukrainne

Ukraine has no issues keeping Russian planes out of its airspace. I am sure Europe can handle what remains of Russian air forces without the US.

Ugh, why do people keep posting stuff behind paywall? Either copy in the text or don’t post it.

Why should the US defend Ukrainian airspace just because other countries feel it is the right move to deploy their soldiers into Ukraine? There is no obligation to defend Ukraine with their own soldiers.
A lot of European countries don’t want to deploy to Ukraine, so I don’t see why the US suddenly should if lots of other countries also don’t want to.

Disappointing, but of course they are under no obligation to do so.
Hopefully this will result in European-developed anti drone air defense becoming the best and most cost-effective in the world.

Sorry to the rest of the world for these idiots currently running the USA. Most of us did not vote for this, but many know he is causing lasting damage to these relationships that will take years to fix. The worst Americans voted for this.

Europe would only need support if they were up against China. If China was going to come after anyone, it probably wouldn’t be Europe though. Hint hint.

Well, I’m not sure if this is good or bad news. Since the US is saying it won’t assist in EU defence, then EU won’t have to follow US demands for constraint. The problem about this war has always been the gloves imposed on Ukraine when it came to retaliate. If a missile gets fired towards Europe, then bomb the shit out of where it came from.

This sort of thing is normal for a collapsing empire which can no longer afford strong military forces. It’s just like the Roman Empire slowly withdrawing from the borders. The USA is just a 20th century Empire in decline. It’s broke and becoming increasingly weak.

I’m not sure why anyone would be surprised by this from the current administration.
He doesnt want to upset his Husband or he aint getting kisses tonight.
Wu should have its’ own air cover
The US is bankrupt. Financially and morally.
We got to kick out these assholes…
I think this is absolutely ok. Give Europe enough time to adapt, that’s it.
It’s okay. He will chicken out eventually.
Whatever it is, he will change his mind because he gets scared.
the war will end after trump dies anyway
Time to tell them to pack their shit and leave. We don’t need an ally that can turn at the moments notice.
No worries, we are working on our own air defence systems. Diehl’s IRIS-T SLM has the [highest kill ratio / efficiency of all air defence missiles used in the Ukraine war](https://united24media.com/war-in-ukraine/top-5-air-defense-systems-that-proved-themselves-in-combat-in-ukraine-8587), surpassing even the (very good) Patriot.
