      >The discharge followed stormwater overflow at Ringsend Wastewater Treatment Plant which was caused by heavy rainfall in recent days.

Some surface water drains drain straight into a local river. Some however go into the same drains as the foul water drains from houses and end up in Ringsend. So when you get heavy rain there’s too much for the plant to take and they release untreated water from the holding tanks.

This issue is made worse be people’s desire to concrete over everything – what was once a bit of grass that would hold water is now concrete that causes rainwater to go straight into the drains.

I’ve done a bit of research, Dunboyne is one of the furthest away areas (30km), serviced by the Ringsend plant.

So with average flow speeds it would take 8hrs for a Plop flushed in Dunboyne to reach Ringsend.
