Potatoes are not native to Ireland. It was introduced to Europe, including Ireland, by Spanish conquistadors in the 16th century. While the potatoes thrived in Ireland and became a staple food, its origin lies in South America.

Sir Walter Raleigh is commonly credited with introducing the potatoes to Ireland in 1589. He is thought to have planted the first potatoes at his estate, Myrtle Grove, in Youghal, County Cork.
