Canada most certainly should. EU should allow to join any country which shares democratic and economic principles with rest of EU. This planet is too small to care about political geography.

Then next in line for applying will be Morocco, Turkey, Algeria.

They have better claims because they’ve millions of their citizens living in Europe.

Even letting in Georgia is seen by Brussels as perhaps too risky.

Far better to have a full economic partnership with Canada where we can mutually benefit. But full integration isn’t needed. It would also threaten the Americans too much. Better off not to start shit over there.

    3. AstraMilanoobum on

They can’t get the current members to agree on shared interests.

I’m sure all EU members would of course keep the interests of a country thousands of miles away as well as they keep their own.

      Will Mongolia be next?

    4. FabulousAd4812 on

Treaties specify only members states of the council of Europe can apply. And to be so…the nation has to be part of Europe.

EU struggles to control its border with Ireland and UK in Northern Ireland- the amount of ‘not for EU’ food on Irish shelves is significant. Now imagine a mercenary bunch like the USA flooding the EU market with their crap across a near 9000 kilometre border?l.

    6. solvedproblem on

Let’s just cooperate and trade as much as can make sense. Buddy up, certainly, but it makes no sense to talk about adding countries in a different continent an ocean away to the EU.

They’re not even in eurovision, let’s start there and see how it goes :p

    7. Silver-John78 on

Why do people keep insisting on this? Is Canada ideologically closer to the EU than the USA, perhaps yes… but is pointless to have this debate. Is already too complicated in Europe as it is… imagine the negotiations for the EU funds… the regional development support… just the scale of Canada…

    8. leaflock7 on

the answer is no for many reasons.
And seeing the PM saying that it could shows that he is incapable of making proper decisions .

    9. krazydude22 on

Canada’s food standards are closer to US than the EU. Aligning them to EU standards would mean major investments from the Canadian government… Is that something that the Canadian government would do?

    10. This is brought up a lot. Thing is, the EU is not just a trade union, it’s a political one too.

Would Canadians he happy about rules that fits Europe is placed onto Canada? I don’t think so. That means Canada would block that kind of stuff to the chagrin of Europeans. It wouldn’t work.

But we can cooperate and trade closely. And that’s what we should do.

    11. Joining the EU is not realistic, but some sort of EFTA like arrangement (not adding Canada to EFTA) could be beneficial for everyone involved.

    12. Glad-Audience9131 on

EU is mostly a concept. and yes, should not be limited to geographic locations.

But Canada joining EU, should adopt EU laws, which i doubt.

    13. supersonic-bionic on

First they need to take part in Eurovision and give 12pts to France.

    14. We were rather hoping to snaffle them into ANZCERTA and TTTA first but I’m down with a bit of EU action too.

Or actually, the common market might be more workable so that politicians aren’t regularly flying to the other side of the planet. Might have to rename the Euro though.

    15. So just to be clear, Canada has a land border with the EU member state of Denmark, but not the actual EU as Greenland only has an OCT agreement with the EU. The land border is on Hans Island, which is under the Nunavut and Greenland administrations.

I am Canadian Irish. I have both citizenships.

Canada and the EU would align broadly and if they were close to each other would be a good solution. Canada has a noisy neighbor, and still does not have full free trade between provinces within the Commonwealth.

I would suggest a EU aligned new organization where the UK, Japan, Australia, NZ, EU and other countries would join. As well as trade a commitment to democracy and the rule of law would be required (thinking Hungary could cause issues here). This would not be a wider EU, but an alliance of high standards trading democratic countries. To encourage others build pathways for South American countries etc. to join.

    17. iTmkoeln on

Well if not the Eu. There is a case to have Canada join the EEA if not the Union as a whole…

    18. ahora-mismo on

it doesn’t have to be all of nothing. i welcome any cooperation with any friendly nation. we should all strive to make our lives better together.

    19. Calm-Bell-3188 on

Well they can’t. But these articles shows friendship and a will to do great things together. We can become closer. We ARE becoming closer.

    20. Ifartinsoup on

I’m a canadian-EU dual national and I think this idea is ridiculous. Apart from the fact that Canada is, you know, not in Europe, there’s also the fact that our federation is dysfunctional and we already have 10 different sets of rules in 10 provinces and internal trade barriers. We can’t even unify ourselves on economic policy or even drinking ages, the provincial governments would tear themselves apart on the negotiation process to get into the EU. I don’t really see what possible benefit it would bring that we couldn’t have just with regular trade agreements and military alliances. Provinces hate having the federal government regulate them, imagine how they’d feel about Brussels trying to do so? To say nothing of the fact that both Canada and the EU have heavily protectionist policies of their agricultural industries. Our dairy industry is never going to agree to let delicious and inexpensive European cheese on our shelves unfortunately. And a thousand other such cases, our oligopolies would be loath to allow any European competition in their captive market.

We also have an insane TFW and “international student” immigration racket going on which would only add to Europe’s problems and probably be cause for plenty of members to block our ascension unless there was some restriction on Canadian freedom of movement, which defeats the purpose.

    21. The concept of Canada joining the EU got subs like this frothing over the idea but it was never realistic, it was really just a reaction to Trump. The fact that the media continues to write about it is… Embarrassing.

Reading the article, it doesn’t get any better, with the following gem:

      >As news spreads of his efforts, his office has received a handful of emails of support. Some have offered up their own thoughts on how to skirt around Canada’s geographic location; one recent email laid out what the writer described as a “killer argument”, pointing out that as part of the Commonwealth Canada was tied to the UK and, by extension, Europe.

      >Streit took it one step further. “And who is the head of Canada?” he asked, pointing to King Charles. “And he’s a European.”

Streit’s really clutching at straws there, and I can’t help but feel like The Guardian is really trying hard to make something out of so little.

They mention a poll in February that found of 1500 Canadians polled 44% thought they should join the EU. It’s high but the conditions render it rather useless. I’d say it reveals more about how Canadians felt about their sovreignty being threatened by it’s much larger neighbour.

Really though, what the fuck happened to the Guardian? Their opinion section has always been awful but it seems to be carrying over to their news section more and more.

    22. the_third_sourcerer on

Before bringing new members, I wish they could revise the methods on how to force a member out, without full majority.

    23. LittleSchwein1234 on

It is possible but the negotiations would be difficult, both sides would need to make concessions. It would change the EU and Canada forever, maybe for the better, maybe for the worse, who knows?

    24. Plane-Return-5135 on

    25. GcubePlayer8V on

I saw they have a ode to joy and so they check all my boxes to be allowed to join

    26. alfadasfire on

Uhh no. EU stands for EUROPEAN Union. Canada is a lot, but not European. Kind of a big puddle in the way too

I cringe each time I see this topic being discussed.

It’s all internet vibes and it’s not rooted in reality.

I’ve a feeling America would throw a fit of epic proportions

    29. loud_v8_noises on

Never happening. I don’t think you guys realize how closely tied the US and Canada are. Trump having a war of words isn’t going to change that.

    30. UnFelDeZeu on

It would be pretty nice to be able to fly to Canada and work there without needing to jump through 10 layers of paperwork.

    31. schtickshift on

Why not join the EU. Canada is culturally an incredibly European country. The synergies are extensive and joining could add momentum to the UK returning as well.

    32. Omurbek3 on

There will be a similar question with Ukraine. Of course not, as long as they are neighbors of the aggressor countries.

    33. pablo8itall on

I don’t think it makes legal sense to have them join the EU.

But we can become bestiest buddies. Canada seems to get it and it on the right side of thing more often than not.

Which always makes me wonder how the US is sooo different.
