Probably wouldn’t be the case if we actually policed the blatant law breaking by these companies and their use of slave labour of illegal immigrants.

I really don’t think anyone is winning with these delivery apps.
The drivers are badly paid. The food place is paying huge fees. The consumer is paying way more for often cold food. Even the apps don’t seem to be making much profit.

That is the core concept of a ‘gig economy’ job isn’t it? If they want a stable income they should get a real job. The demand for these app based delivery jobs seems to come mainly from people without the right to work in the UK.

I’m afraid I simply don’t care, it’s extremely low skilled work which if it went away you’d hardly notice. Either get another job if the pay is too low and if you can’t because you are skirting the immigration employment rules then don’t try and play the system.

The plan is to replace low paid workers with automation and technology including drones. Margins at these companies are ultra thin, so when then remove all the human bottlenecks, they become profitable. That said, this will leave thousands of people turning to government support in the medium term and basically none of the skills acquired are transferable.

I’m usually a free market guy but I would have no issue with a government that banned every single one of these gig economy delivery companies. They blatantly skirt immigration law and form a massive pull factor for illegal immigration and offer a bad, expensive service that pushes out in-house delivery methods.

The entire gig industry has thrived due to illegal immigration and insurance fraud on an astronomical scale. I’ve worked in insurance and I’ve worked for Uber and Just Eat etc. The whole industry is an unregulated disgrace. Just Eat are by far the worst offenders.

How the fuck is it so cheap to hire a human for 20 minutes? I shouldn’t be able to pay £2 to get a guy to cycle through busy traffic for 20 minutes to get my food. These people are severely underpaid.

Why else would they be doing such a miserable job? Its not a bug its a feature.

This whole sector needs to die.
It only functions by exploiting “self employed” status – but these riders are not really self employed as professionals would understand it, offering services to clients – they are required to show up and do work for the platform and they get no say in pay or conditions. They are part time employees in all but name, and should be awarded the same protections.
The sector also has significant negative social effects. Because the riders are on the clock, they ride dangerously, illegally and antisocially (most of the “I hate bikes, they run red lights and ride on the pavement” comments you’ll see are actually these guys on modified e-bikes). It’s a huge black market economy which attracts illegal immigrants. Kitchens producing food for delivery compete with normal takeaways, making it harder to get food in a normal way (and I bet working conditions in those kitchens are shit too).
This would be quite easy to fix in law, just make it so buying services from a self employed contractor regularly* at less than £200 a day isn’t legal, you have to employ them. Real self employed people are charging way more than that already. This would probably make the whole sector non-viable, but as I said above, I’m fine with that.
It’s not just food delivery, there was a bit of a scandal about Hermes drivers a while back too, Uber is the same model and I’m sure there are others.
*: like for more than 5 days in a 3 month period or something, so you can still get your mate in to plaster a wall for £50 without it being illegal
